Plugs

My 1987 F-250 has two female plugs that appears to be the same for hooking trailer lights to. Are they the same? This is near the spare tire in the factory wire loom. Also from side to side what is the order for lights on a 4-prong flat plug? Thanks for any help. Sure some of this has been asked before but didn't find it in a search.

Read your question, but I just don't follow.

Here is the link to the 7-round plug. If you read further down, it'll tell you the color code for each connection. I don't believe there is a national code for the 4 pin, but by using a voltmeter or a test light, you should be able to tell what is what. Obviously, you will need another warm body to help you determine what color does what on YOUR plug.

What do you make out of the OP's comment about having two plugs? Sounds strange to me.

Sounds like a Previous Owner's re-wire job! Maybe for a trailer AND a camper???

The plugs are identical and run into the factory wire loom that doesn't appear to have been modified in any way. My rear bumper is setup with both the 7-pin & 4-pin trailer connectors. This bumper come off of a truck that i totaled out, the 7-pin i just unplugged, but new truck has two plugs that it could plug into, also had to cut the wires going to the 4-pin connector so don't know which wire had run to what pin on the connector. That is the reason for the questions. Hope that makes it more clear.

If I remember correctly:

Green wire = right turn signal/stop light
Yellow = left turn signal/stop light
Brown = License plate lights, side markers, tail lights
White = ground

The truck side will have one pin without a protective sleeve over it. The un-sleeved pin is the ground, and it should be white, then brown, yellow, green. Worse case scenario, find a trailer with a 4 pin plug, and wire your truck to match the pinouts.

They may be the same the original owner may have had a slide in camper that used one for turn and brake lights and pulled a trailer that used the other one.

You know, I think using a meter or test light it might be possible to answer the question as to whether or not the plugs are the same pretty fast. Just check a couple of terminals in each and see if they light the light or show voltage on the same terminals with a turn signal or marker lights on.

The original ford trailer wiring kit would have plugged in there. You may be able to still find one on ebay or an older trailer/hitch dealer with old stock laying around. It's similar to the one on my 86. It was a pig tail for connecting the trailer connector of your choice up to a 7 pin. It should have the wiring for +12v and trailer brake along with the lighting circuits. The 12v is I think is a large yellow wire and the brake is a large blue wire. If you have that wiring, than under your dash is a brake controller harness as well. I ended up snipping the ends off and wiring mine up manually.
