I just bought an replacement engine for my truck so i have two of everything, and i got to thinking I'm not a big AC guy i like the windows down and plus this truck whenever it gets done will be used mostly just for having fun in, so would it be possible to run both alternators with one where the AC unit would go. (id have to make a custom bracket or something)
Has anyone done this. and also I don't even know if this would do much for me anyways, but i've seen it as an option of new trucks so i figure theres some advantages. what do you guys think?
But why buy yet a third alternator if you already have two though? Sometimes it's more fun to build something different, even if it takes more effort, than just buy something anyone can go out and buy.
I recall something a while back discussed about dual alternators, can't remember what, where or when though.
yeah thats the thing I don't know if i'll need two so i dont want to spend any money but if i have an extra laying around i figure i'll try something different
unless you plan on running a lot of electrical stuff and having a constant draw of around 60 or more amps, there is no need for dual alternators.
the reason the new trucks have duals and 200 amp alternators in they also have a constant power draw when running upwards of 100 amps.
I have never seen the need for dual alt.s unless maybe you want to set up one for a welder or something like that. As far as just eliminating the air conditioner, I have always set it up for an air compressor and found it very useful. Nowadays as I get older I find the air conditioner more useful.
i like the air compressor idea. now is that something i would have to buy or does it run off of the AC unit. and did you set it up with a tank or just pressure when the engine is running
if you use the AC unit you currently have you will have to install an oiler circuit.
most people put an older york AC compressor in, because they have a built in crank case for its own oil supply. then you can hook the clutch up to a pressure switch, and hang a tank somewhere under the truck.
if i had the place to mount a york, my trucks would be setup that way. unfortunately, i need ac in the summer due to respiratory problems, mainly allergy's, so i have to use electric compressors.
Oh i see I'll have to look into that. I can definatly see a compressor being very handy at times. I guess I'll just shelf one of the alts, and look around for a york or see if i can figure out an oiler circut
i see plow head gear i think.
id do the 3g 130a upgrade.even with dual 2g's,your still not getting what you could at idle with the 3g could ya? not sure how they work setup in parallel.
i dunno what you'd need to run dual alts though.im sure a search will show ya quick.
if your not having any issues plowing now,i wouldn't worry about it.
personally, thats more work then its worth. save your ac pump and run this in its place dc5000 dc7000 Viair,Zenith compressors constant oil supply so you dont have to worry about always adding it. then if you ever feel like a/c again you can just throw your old brackets and pump on.
