after my truck sits a while it doesnt want to start. The glow plug light will come on for about 8 seconds and i try to start, but it takes like 20 seconds or so. I only turn it over for about 5 seconds at the time. also it has just start running a little sluggish.(bogging down). Starts smoking out of the tale pipe when i stay in first second third or 4th for more than a few seconds. then if i am running in 5th and let off the pedal it will blow out a cloud of smoke. have not had this happen before. It has close to 300,000 miles on it i think. any ideas on my problem?
oh it's that time of the year. First check your glow plugs, take a test light and connect the alligator clip to the positive battery terminal, take wire off glow plug, touch tip of glow plug with the test light... if it lights up good then the gp is ok, if not replace with berus.
Second thing to check is let it sit over night then pull the fuel filter and see if it's full of fuel. If not then you have an air intrusion problem, post back here with your findings for help with the repairs.
the fuel filter was changed last year but i have not put but maybe 5000 miles on the truck. and i change the air filter every oil change which i do every 4 months
Before I did anything else I would install a new filter with the fuel conditioner, cleaner of choice, and crank it for 15 or 20 seconds and then let it sit overnight or longer.
The idea here is for the fuel cleaner to have a chance to clean and lubricate your pump and injectors.

yup. fill the new filter with diesel kleen, spin it on, crank the engine for 15-20 seconds to fill the injector pump with the diesel kleen, and turn the key off.
i let the truck sit for a couple of days and pulled off the the filter and it was full of fuel so i guess i dont have air intrusion. I am going to get the cleaner and a new filter to see if it will help with my smoking problem. Its getting worse than it was. I am guessing i need new glo plugs but i have not checked them yet to see.
ok i put the new filter on and i also filled it with cleaner and let it run for 15 seconds. it started shaking real bad. after i let it sit do i need to pull the filter off and pour out the cleaner or just let it burn off?
well i checked the glo plugs and 2 on the passenger side were not working. I went on and changed them all. One of them on the drivers side was a little hard to get off because of fuel lines but i got it off. I cranked it up and it started a lot faster than it usually does. Its still blowing smoke out like crazy though. its a bluish smoke. It also doesnt respond well when i hit the pedal. Kinda sluggish.
