breaking in my engine.

I want to start and break in my engine while I have my body off the frame, what I need to know is how can I wire it so that the engine will start and run without using the entire wire harness, I have a hei dizzy so i know I just have to give it 12V and a hot wire to the starter and a ground. The reason I want to do this is after I run it for about 20 mins at 2000 RPM I have to re-torque the head and intake bolts and it would be much easier to do without the cab and stuff in the way. Thanks

As far as wiring what you mentioned should do the trick. You will need to have the radiator hooked up with water in it though. Another item would be a manual oil pressure guage to make sure you have oil pressure when you fire it. Be sure to pre lube the engine. A water temp guage would be benificial to keep an eye on temperature. Also to get the engine to fire right off you can use spray carb cleaner and spray some in the carb to start it till the fuel gets pumped into the carb. If you used Fel-pro head gaskets you would not need to retorque the heads.

Thanks moose. I made a temp radiator support so I can hook up my radiator. I have an electric fuel pump so getting fuel to it shouldn't be an issue. I primed the engine today before I put the dizzy in it. The reason i have to re-torque the head gaskets is cause the engine builder requires it or the warranty will be void.

Make sure the engine is cold when you retorque the head bolts (studs ?). Also drain the coolant system before to prevent any unwanted water entering the combustion chamber.

When I retorque my heads (Cometic gaskets) after the annual tear down, I make a visual mark where the head bolt was before loosening the nut. When retorqueing (sp?) the head you can see if it tightened up some. Since it's a new engine, I would record your findings, may come in usefull down the line.
