I have a 302 in my truck, 73 f100 2wd auto... and i was looking at replacing a few things in my ignition system and i came upon some weird info about a duraspark 2 swap over...
since this is the first ford ive owned, and worked on... i am at a loss. I am finding that the original ditributer cap was small comparred to that which was used with a duraspark 2 system, something to do with increased spark discarge...
can anyone go on a bit further with this and educate me? im swaping between google, mustang forums, FTE, and autopart stores... im getting a bad feeling that my truck is wired something redneck like and i dont like it one bit...
The Duraspark gurus will be along. They are prolly sleeping about now. Sounds like ya may have a combination of DS1 and DS11. I have never got along with the DS ignition. But it is dependable when put together right and properly maintained. But it is still a sunny beach for me to diagnose. But I am learning from the guys here as you will see.
I read though some of the wiring instructions and it seems that perhaps maybe this was attempted on my engine, and aparently the distributer cap was upgraded. The funny part about this is that i know the 351w and the 302 distributers arent compatable. but the the PO, who was working on the truck had it wired up for a 351, when if fact its a 302... which raises up a few other quams in my thinking about what could really be going on with my engine
I need expert guidance on this im thinking... the DS2 module, doesnt look anything like what i have, from online pics anyways... my ignition box is small and has the "Fin" heatsink on top which is consistant with my thinking that it should be there as intended from factory
The dizzy won't interchange and the firing order is different between the W and the pony motor (but either can be modified and made to work). Ya never said if yer engine is running or not? And how do ya know for sure it's a 302 pony? Is it an original engine or modified beyond the DS ignition yer having problems with. Like Clever heads and like that.
after i switched the wires to a 302, it started and ran. Ive never had a major issue with it running, but at the moment, i have a vacuum leak that just wont quit, and i think my carb is busted since it still runs with the idle screw on the right bank screwed all the way in... anyways...
after i swtiched the wires to a 302 configuration, it started up and ran, but its puttering (for lack of a better word) at idle. Kinda sounds like i have a subwoofer in my exhaust and isnt really sounding smooth throught the exhaust... I do know that the heads on and the intake arent from 73. It has an egr port on the intake under the carb, and it has a "cast iron" type gasket with the metal filament in it with the slot for the egr in the gasket under the spacer. the spacer doesnt have an egr port, its just hollow underneath and the spark plugs arent the correct fat ones for 73, they are small, i think the part number from champion is like 24 or something...
i know i still have alot of work ahead of me but it seems to be one thing after another, this coming from a 2 owner truck....
Can you post pictures of all the components in your setup?
i will sometime tomorrow afternoon... been at work since 11, wont think about going home till probably 1230 or so.. ill also take a video of the start up because its cold out here and it smokes a wee bit at start up you can see the puttering a bit more clearly.
