For anyone that may have been wondering how FM's sound on a newer pickup, here goes. I had everything stock removed but the manifolds and the pipe that comes down, but where it went into single exhaust now goes into an X pipe, it's a true dual setup, no cat, 2.5 in pipe into 2 40 series FM's, 3 in out the muffler and dumped right over the rear axle with some nice big tips and it sound freakin awesome. I was going to try Ravin's but couldnt wait but Im kinda glad I got these. I recommend it highly. It really rumbles and went you kick down to pass, good christ it gets racey sounding.
i just dont get it! everyone says they sound good and are plenty loud with 460s but mine sounds ok if your outside but when im inside the truck forget it i cant hear anything except the tires howl as im going down the road. i have no cats and a efi 460 with flowmaster 40 series and dumps just passed the cab. is 2 1/2 inch pipe too big? heck even my small block 302 is louder than my 460 and they have identical exhaust except my bronco is 2 1/4 inch pipes
No 2.5"ipe is'nt too big. Honestly I have no idea why your isn't loud. I have FM 40's on two different pickups. My 71 FE 416 with headers, 3" with 40's dumped right behind the cab with big tips sounds raw and muscley and is plenty loud. My 95 with 460 isnt loud like it is, but it still has that FM sound. My 95 is quiet inside the cab, you can hear it but it's not loud and at highway speed you cant really hear it unless you open up the back window, but when you pull up to a stop light it rumbles in the cab quite a bit. outside it doesnt really seem loud until you are in town accelerating and the sound bounces off other cars and everyone looks at it. And when I hit passing gear it it roars. Today i was at my dads house and I heard him start it when I was in the house and it really rumbled in the house. It's not terribly loud, but it sounds cool, and nobody really expects a newer pickup to sound like that. I really do think that the x pipe helps the sound a lot. The say it makes things a lot quieter, but Im not so sure about that. The bottom line is, it's about the perfect sound for a daily driver. It's not so loud that I get tired of it, but it is plenty loud to be heard.
well i was just talking to some friends of mine and they say they can hear me a block away so maybe the fact i have noise dampning stuff on my firewall and under the carpet is actually doing its job. i guess i just didnt realize how loud it actually was since ive never heard my truck driven down the road with me outside just listening.
Yeah that's the part that sucks is that we don't get to stand a hundred ft away from our pickups and hear these exhaust systems that we work so hard on rumble up and down the streets. you just have to remember that it may seem quiet in the cab, but outside of it is a different story.
