Just got a 5.4L Expedition earlier today ( 60K miles )- noticed it has a bit of a miss at idle and noticeable miss above idle. The check engine light flashed quickly and then stayed lit. Any ideas or common things to check for & how do you retrieve the error codes?
I don't know if it had the miss before I washed the engine compartment - although I did have the truck running when I was cleaning. Everything is dry in there now.
Check the passenger rear coil pack and plug for corrsion. This is a common problem on 5.4L expy's.
The heater hose above it needs the clamp tightened and the coil pack and plug need to be replaced.
MY '98 EXPY JUST DID THE SAME THING,BUT RUN ROUGH OR MISSED AT ALL TIME, AT ANY RPM. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT FIXED. THEY SAID IT WAS A SPARK PLUG AND PLUG COIL GONE BAD. IF YOU WASHED THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, YOU MY HAVE CRACKED A PLUG WHEN THE COLD WATER CONTACTED A HOT PLUG OR GOT WATER IN ONE OF THE COILS.
I figured I may as well put in a fresh set of plugs, when I started replacing them, I noticed the pass side rear plug had some more deposits - I checked the coil - noticed a small 1/2" crack, repalced the coil & it runs fine. Seems to be a fairly common item, this dealer has sold 35+ in the last 12 months.
I had my '99 Expy for a month when it started leaking coolant badly and ran very rough (like a straight 4 with the other half along for the ride) Turns out that a batch of Expy's came out with the clamp loose on the heater hose which dumps coolant on the passenger rear coil pack (like noted above), destroys it and in a flash, you've just modified your V8 into a 4 banger...
