I can't believe all the answers I'm getting. I sure appreciate it. Here's another question I'd like help with. This is more a convenience issue and I'll do it only if it's cheap and not very much trouble. I had a '97 reg. cab but needed more room so I bought a '99 ext. cab with a topper. It also has two doors. The extended part is almost inaccessable. The '97 dome light stayed when I got in and closed the door until I turned the key or for about 20-30 secs. The '99's light only is on when the door's not shut. I like the '97 dome light operation. Does anyone know if the '99 can be made to work like that? And would it be a big hassle, and what would I need? Please answer if you can. I hope to hear "no problem, really easy, really cheap." Thanks, steeranger
I think your 99 has a problem with the door switch or whatever controls when the light goes off. My 03 does what you stated your 97 did. And i'm pretty sure my old '00 did the same.
I've heard of the door switches being a problem on these trucks, but I can't remember if it was related to the dome light on these trucks. Seemed to be the fix was to spray some WD40 in the switch catch or something like that. Don't quote me on that though. Try doing a search with "dome light" as the search terms.
Yah my 99 dome light turns off as soon as I close the door, it doesn't have the "Theater Lightng"/Dimming, where the light remains on for 30 seconds or so, then slowly dims, or turns off.
I suspect it has to do with the GEM module programming & I'm not sure you could swap a 97 GEM into a 99, or have the 99 GEM re-programmed, so the dome light stays on longer like your 97 & still have it properly control the other things it has responsibility for.
Maybe a Ford Tech reading this, or the Dealer would know?????
