Yo. I'm using a 79 Bronco steering wheel (with the fancy faux burlwood inlay on the horn pad!) on my 73 4x4. No cruise control. I couldn't pass it up for $10 at the salvage yard.

'Can't help you otherwise but someone will chime in for sure.

Speed control has nothing to do with the steering wheel

The horn pad with speed control buttons is what makes speed control.

I am using a late 80's ish Bronco leather wrapped steering wheel in my 79, works like a charm.

steponit is correct cruise control is all in the center horn pad as far as the control buttons.

73-79 I believe are pretty much the same, but do not hold me to that statement.

The 67-77 wheels will interchange. And the 78-86 wheels will interchange. I did put a 1986 Lariat Wheel on my 1977 and it took some mods but it wasn't hard.
I'm curious how Hio got that wheel on his truck.

Ditto, me too, since I was trying to do the opposite swap, a 73 wheel on a 78 and was told it wouldn't go without extreme mods.

Here's a thread on how I got my 86 wheel on my 77 column. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ing-wheel.html
Another member found it confusing so hopefull you can make some sence of it. It seems to me that putting the older wheel on a newer column woudl be pretty easy but I've never tried. it.

2 things to look for are how the splines are "keyed" (I believe they're different between the earlier and later versions) and how the horn button contacts in the wheel and column come together...

I was going to put the sport wheel from a '78 Econoline in my truck, but it would've taken some modification to get it to work so I opted for a Grant GT wheel instead...

I adressed all that in my link above if you want to check it out.

A little off topic but on my 79 my wheel is a little off center when driving straight. Is it possible to remove the wheel, clock it to where its straight and reinstall it or does it have a keyed only fit one way on the shaft kinda thing?

It will only go on one way. The 77 and older wheels can be installed in any position as they are splined the whole way around. On the 78 and up wheels there is an area of about 3-4 splines that are not cut so theres basically a flat spot in the splines so the wheel can only go on one way. The only way around that is to file that flat spot out with a round file which is exactly what I did to my 1986 wheel to get it on my 1977 column. Its not much, it takes about 30 seconds.

Blown331 / Fresian:

'dunno. I simply unbolted the cracked & split 73 wheel and bolted on the new-to-me wheel. It fit without any mods to the splines or anything. I'll shoot some pics this weekend and show yall.

I did an integral PS swap from the same Bronco and couldn't get my horn to work until I electrically jumped the Bronco's steering shaft and again at the rag joint at the steering box. That was the only "mod"... more of a work-around really.

So you have a 78/79 column in your 73? That explains it then, if the wheel and column are the same year then they obviously fit together. I'd still like to see some pics. I've never seen a pic of the entire column swapped.

Nope.... Lemme clarify- I swapped in the Bronco's intermediate steering shaft and integral PS box. I still have the 73 steering column.

Just remembered - the Bronco's intermediate shaft on the steering column end has a single-D and is splined. I had to grind a flat spot in the 73's splined steering shaft to install.

Anything can be swapped with modification.

However...

1971-1977 steering wheels are a direct swap.

1978-1986 are also a direct swap.

The same year econolines will also work.

Putting a 1978-1986 wheel on a 1971-1977 column will have issues. turn signal cancel cam wont work anymore is one. Grinding to make it fit is another. The horn brush wont seat in the wheel quite right. I don't recommend swapping them myself.
