excessive oil presure???

Hello all, over the last few months at randoms times my oil presure spikes enough to blow the gasket out of my oil filter, and im looking for the cause of this.
Over the last two days this has happened at start up in the morning and not again til the next morning.... i recently flushed the oil with a flush product( dont remember the name) in an attempt to cure this problem... i guess it didnt work....
Also i have no breathers on the motor in an attempt to reduce the preasure.

Any and all help is appreciated , thanks eric

I had this problem drove me nuts for awhile. The pressure relief vale in the oil pun has gotten stuck have to replace the pump. Part is cheap but its a pain to get to.

The breather is there to relieve crankcase pressure but won't affect oil pressure.

Also unsure what you meant by the engine having no breather. Plugging it up could cause lots of trouble, such as oil leaks from the crankshaft seals and sludge buildup inside the motor. Leaving them wide open can result in dust, dirt and other assorted crap getting inside the crankcase.

Sounds like the pressure relief valve is sticking. You didn't say what vehicle you're talking about or which engine you have but like Macattack said, it's probably inside the oil pan.

The good news is that your bearings probably aren't worn out.

...sorry for the lack of info, its a 72 f100,4 x 2 longbed with a 360, 4 bbl, 3 speed on the tree ( also known as "BETTY" ).ive been driving this one about 8 years and this problem has been occuring for about 2 years at random times. i ment that i took the breathers off the valve covers in an attempt to relieve preasure while trying to figure out whats wrong. i assume the relief valve is attached to the oil pump?

Either on the pump or adjacent to it. It's just a spring check valve and it's hard to think of how it could fail intermittently but maybe there's something floating aroind in there blocking the bypass flow now and then??? Either way, changing the valve will pobably fix it.

You might be able to do it without pulling the engine. I haven't been underneath mine to know how big the difference is between our generation and like a 76, but we changed an oil pump on my friend's 76 F250 with a 460 in it and we did it without pulling the engine or even having the truck up on a lift. Good luck!

Don't know about the '72 but the shop manual for my '68 simply says to remove the pan bolts, rotate the crank as necessary for the pan to clear the counterweights on the crank, and remove the pan. That makes it sound like a 30-minute job to drop the pan. Another 20 to replace the pump, 30-45 to put the pan back up, fill it with oil and drive. If it were me, I'd budget about 3 hours for the job; looks pretty straightforward.
