got a 04 with 5.4 and custom tuned SCT chip didnt see any gain in performance or mpg. i have since went back to stock intake with napa premium filter for two months no change in performance or mpg plus ten times better filteration with stock over k&n filters
If you want to see an mpg improvement, make sure the old filter is absolutely filthy before changing. Otherwise, you'll be disappointed. The stock filter setup in the V10 is very, very good. Unless you're doing a bunch of other stuff to pump up power, (cams, headers, exhaust, porting, etc etc etc), it's not worth the cost.
Some of us have replaced the small snorkel inlet with the much bigger one from an '05 plus air filter housing (has to be glued on after enlarging opening on stock housing) and feel a small improvement at high power levels. Helps for hard pulls (towing up grades) at 4K+ rpm.
I've got the aFe Power Pro Dry S magnum force cold air intake. The filter works just fine and I have no idea about MPG or power gain as I change some other stuff at the same time. I've had no problems.
I've tried aftermarket filters on a number of vehicles. On my F150, I did a dyno test before and after. I actually lost power with the aftermarket filter. I forget what the "term" is, but the computer's job is to maintain the right air to fuel ratio. More air in, just means the computer feeds more fuel. You won't see an increase in mpg.
Ok thx guys. I recently did a tune up and I had a Vacume leak. replaced the IAC. it looks like I gained about 1 to 2 MPG.
I know that some engines do well with larger air flow, that's why I was thinking about cold air intake. and some do NOT.
