just had the following done:
Timing belt, pulley and tensioner
water pump
serp. belt tensioner
pwr steering lines (pressure and return)
plugs and wires
heater core
replaced climate control switch
I bought the parts (approx $500)and my guy only charged me $462 labor. Feels like I got a sweet deal considering Ford told me the heater core replacement would be about $750.
1) mechanics never ever let you supply the parts because of one simple reason: they cannot buy them for you and mark them up for a huge profit
2) $462 for labor is a great price for the amount of work you listed
a majority of the work you listed is a pain in the neck to do and quite time consuming.
i'm very impressed you were willing to spend a thousand dollars on your vehicle to keep it running. most people would not do that for a 200k mile car. but in reality, you get out of it what you put into it, most people would throw it in the trash and go sign on the dotted line for a new car, make payments every month, pay tons of interest, and full coverage insurance because the bank owns the car and forces you to.
so in reality you saved yourself alot of money. and these are things that if they broke down on you, it would be catastrophic and leave you stranded and cause you to miss work, so again, it is money well spent. alot of people would never dream of spending that. but would drop 2k on rims in a heartbeat.
i just put new valve stem seals in mine (cost 20 bucks but took ALL weekend to do)
and now that it is not consuming oil anymore i am going to replace my clogged catalytic converter $275
and i just put new spark plug wires on it because the previous owner put 117k on it without ever changing them $30
