Meyer E-47 pump questions

I got a free pickup with a Meyer E-47 pump. It runs but doesn't lift up. I can lift the hydraulic arm myself. Does that mean the top seals are shot? The truck sat for 7 yrs outside...

Also, how much fluid is suppsed to be in each of the pistons on the plow blade. I drained the old fluid out and added some when it was compressed figuring you don't want to fill it when its expanded...

I haven't been over there lately, but Meyers has a site that you can download excellant manuals on their pumps. They have a service manual and a owner/operator manual.

There is a fill plug for the pump I believe on top. Make sure you have oil in it. You are not supposed to use any fluid other than the "Meyers" fluid, but I use Dexron auto tranny fluid. The only problems I have are when it's very cold outside, the blade is a little slow till the fluid warms up, the Meyers fluid is very very thin, and it has stuff in it to keep water that gets in the fluid from freezing.

That's one of the main problems with these plows, they get water in the fluid when you use them. I don't know if the snow gets past the cylinder seals or what, but if it gets in there bad enough, it will stop the system from working when it turns to ice inside the hydraulics. I am due to change the fluid in mine this year for this very reason, just to get the water out of it.

You must fill the angle cylinders as full as you can get them. The book says to fill them, and then crack the lines as you angle it back and forth to get the air out. I find this very messy and takes a long time to work. What I do is stand the blade up on it's face. With the angle cylinder hydraulic lines hooked together(like you normally do for storage), I move the A frame back and forth by hand, and then push it to one side and then disconnect the hydraulic line and the fitting on the cylinder. I fill the cylinder with oil till it runs out, install the fitting back on the cylinder and hook the line back up, and the push the A frame back and forth a couple of times again. I then take the line and fitting off again, put more oil in, and do the same thing over and over till I can't get anymore fluid in the cylinder. This gets almost all the air out, enough to where it works fine.

Here's where you can download the manuals. I love a company that is open and free with their technical stuff. Some companies seem to realize a good product along with lots of free info about it is good business.

Plow stuff

Thank you-I did get the manual, was just wondering if the top seal was bad thus being able to lift the piston pretty easily.

hope this helps.

btw, if you're planning on using it this winter and it's been sitting for 7 years, i would STRONGLY recommend pulling the entire unit apart and replacing all o-rings and cleaning all the components and filters.

I printed out the manual and carry it with me while I plow. I'm a member of plowsite.com also, lots of help available there.
