service engine light

Is there a way to get a code without a reader? The cel light came on tonight and I'm leaving for a 300 mile trip tomorrow afternoon. Dealer is a week out on work and can't get me in till next monday. I've only got 900 miles on the truck. I didn't notice any difference in driving or anything. Any help?

O'Reilly's and AutoZone have readers. Not sure if they are compatible with the 2011's yet. If you have one close by, it's only a couple of minutes for them to come out to the truck and plug in their reader. Worth a shot.

I don't care if they're a month out. It wouldn't take them 5 minutes to let you knpow if it's safe. Code readers are pretty quick and sofisticated.

no, that doesn't seem like it would work. Just didn't know if there was a way to get a code without a reader. I know some vehicles would flash a series of flashes and that was you're code. I'm gonna call the dealer again in the morning and see if they can just resd the code.

on all my OBDII vehicles to date, there has been a way to get the code without a reader. I'm not sure what the procedure is for this truck, but it *should* be possible... it usually involved grounding one pinout while performing a key cycle procedure, then reading the number of flashes of the CEL.

A week out for any diesel work? yuck. is there another dealer or ford diesel shop close by?

Any OBDII read should be able to read standard codes, defination may be missing. Vendor specific may be missing (like TPMS). Try it...

Not sure about that. I had a Service Engine light come on last week and stopped by AZ to check codes. They could not find any. Got home and hooked up my AE and read the regular two codes for some equip deletions I have made and one new one for HPOP. This is on a 2000 model year.

pulled the codes and it was a p2200 and p2209 which I had the guy clear. So far it seems like they are nothing to worry about, just a nox sensor.

There was someone earlier who reported a bad NOx sensor as well. The dealer replaced and no problem since. Keep your eye on it.

Dealer did the flash today and said that took care of the light. I was under the impression it had been flashed before I picked it up as I asked them to do it. Needless to say I drove 5 miles down the road to pickup a pizza and the light came back on. I even told them the code numbers I pulled from it. Oh well.

My check engine light came on and stayed on after 100 miles. Did not notice any performance change. It turned out to be a loose plug on the fuel temperature sensor. It took longer for the mechanic to do his test than to fix it. I was out of there in 15 minutes.
