I am no expert on these issues but I will give it a shot. The 2003 and early 2004's had a number of issues which I cannot even begin to explain. Lets just say they were numerous and many owners had them in the shop waaayyy more than they were driving them. That was all pretty much resolved by late 2004 and into 2005 for sure. The 6.4 had some regeneration issues the first year. Not sure what else but they were known to throw a nice flame out the exhaust tip. The second year did not see many issues that I have heard about.
I know! But he wants to get a newer truck. So it's either the 6 blow or a 6.4...
Jay I think he mainly wants crew cab but it doesn't have to be newer just the bigger cab with the kids and all.

Are there certain years where that is true and untrue? Teach me please!
Jay pretty much has ya covered as far as your question goes. I had an '03 6.0 for a work truck and that thing was in the shop all the time! The newer the 6.0 the less trouble you have. As far as the 6.4 goes I think the most trouble was the earlier oones also. Here is a vid of the flames they would throw.
Well Tom just left after having dinner/lunch out here in Supper Town! LOL Sounds like that guy was having trouble with his SCT tunes in his truck. They pulled them out and everything seemed ok.
Cory told me he would like to get something newer as well if he finds the right deal.
I love those flames.
Huh. The guy claimed to have the issue with or without the tuner I thought. It would have been my first suggestion otherwise. Maybe I mis-read his post.
Ok, I remember my dad's 6.4 knocked like that, but it never threw flames like that. Ours was bought in December of 2007. The knocking eventually went away, as I don't think the Ford Servicing ever found it. Thanks guys, I appreciate the shared knowledge!
Jay is right on with late 04 being much better. However, they really require good maintenance. If you want a tuner on a 6.0, you need to do head studs and gaskets. Egr delete is surely a good plan along with a coolant filter.

And just a reminder that there is a GTG thread for December in caase people have not seen it. Not too much traction on the thread yet but it is looking like Dec 4th will be the day. Please chime in though
We talked at the last camping trip and we both agreed that while the 7.3 is the best work horse that best case scenario you STILL have an 8 year old engine and body. So that is why he was thinking something newer. At least that was my interpretation
