Whets up ya'll? I bought my self a 79 f-250 it has a 351m in it now how ever the passenger side or right side head as low compression on one of the cylinders. so i bought a 400 from a guy that pulled it out of his 79. now here is my ? and i am sure it has been ask a dozen time and if so i apologize for the redundant ?. but is there an overdrive trans for the c-6 that is in the truck now and if not is there one i can bolt up from the junkyard and what will i need? also would like to know if the 400 is a better motor then the 351m. i didn't feel like i could go wrong seeing how i only paid $300 for a good running motor.
The 351 is a good motor that will suit most of your needs. If the 400 is in good shape you might be better off swapping motors, because low compression is a sign of worn rings, which require an engine rebuild. I havent done it personally, but everything should bolt up in that swap. As for the trans, you cant make the c6 into an overdrive, if thats what youre asking. nothing will bolt up without additional parts that will give you an OD tranny
i am not looking for a bolt on for the c-6 just maybe a diffrent trans with overdrive like maybe somthing from a newer truck that might have the same bolt patteron as the 400.
An E40D from a small block will fit, but you will need to get the computer with it, or a standalone controller to run it. the controller will run you close to 1k, and trying to integrate the computer into your truck would be a nightmare. For what its worth, you would be better off looking into a manual swap for the extra gear if you are set on it. If you plan to do alot of highway driving where the OD would be beneficial, look into swapping your gears out.

the small block bolt pattern would not fit.
I would look into an AOD or such from behind a 460 if you wanted OD.
in my opinion fords AOD was a light duty trany and a piece of junk . fords only good OD
auto is the E4OD with out getting into the newer ones and one from a 460 might work but you will need the tranny controller and computer and harness from a donner truck . or a stand alone controller $$
