400 build up

ok i am in the proces of build in up a motor for my 79 4x4 with 35's. the motos thats in it is a 351m, but i bought a 400 for 500$ that was just rebuilt.

I would like to have some more power from it from going up a muddy hill to hitting 2nd hard and going side ways on pavement, buti dont want to spend an arm and a leg.

SO for now here is what im thinking; weiland actionplus manifold, 600cfm dubble pumper(was going to go with the truck adventure but i heard they were junk) cam, headers, and a high preformance replacement distributer.

o yes the truck is 4 speed with grany. tell me what you think, am i missing any thing, and what cam should i get want one with slite loope.

then im going to finish it off with 2 40 series flowmasters

thanks for any input
TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK

A little more info on exactly what you want to do with the truck would help. If you are climbing hills and off roading you likely don't want to get into a cam with much lope to it, unless you are using really low gears in which case it wouldn't be a great street truck. Get the idea. You can't have it all with one vehicle so decide what is most important to you and let us know how you plan to use it and you'll get lot's of valuable help here. What ignition is on it? If you have a factory electronic you don't need to spend money on an after market. You must replace the timing set however with an after market one.

Then you are looking for a torque monster which means choose a cam with lots of low end, someone else who is doing climbing should chime in here to let you know what has worked well for them. You could also call a manufacturer and tell them what you've got and what you want and they willl make a recommendation. I think they even have online info sheets at there web site to do by email if you like. Definately stay in the smaller, 600-650 with the carb. I have heard a number of situations with the truck avenger carb that are not positive but some have liked it alot. You want to component match all your parts to work in the same rpm range. ie, cam, carb, manifold, exhaust size. You should be looking at products that make power from idle to 4500rpm. You won't be needing anything above that climbing so get all the grunt you can down there.

You might be better steering away from the double pumper carb also and stick with an Edelbrock #1825 650CFM off road carb with man choke. The manual choke carb can be an advantage sometimes.

I have tried a lot of carbs on my 400. My 400 is built close to what your looking for. Nothing I have found compares to a factory Motorcraft when the going gets steep and rocky, so I have a motorcraft bolted to my 4-barrel manifold and probably always will.

carb stuff.

Once you start making some power the 9" is junk. 400 with some compression and a nice cam like 268hi energy is decent. or something in this duration. valvespring upgrade is a must for some rpms. Being your running a 4 speed you can run a cam with some duration. Next thing is clutch will be a issue. centerforce is nice like dual friction. Need to make sure you don't crack frame! If cracked frame in rear of frame, break bellhousing or c-6 housing,cha-ching$$$ On the ford 9" the pinion support back bearing is your weak link. broken many!! upgraded to heavier axles and solved problems. Could spend money on more durable 9"housing cha-ching$$$ One of the problems with 1/2 ton is axle wrap and taking out u-joints and causing many driveline problems. this is only a problem once you really start hooking up rear tires. If spinning and not biting not a issue. Carb stuff wouldn't waste my time with a 600 cfm too small. Like breathing through a straw for a 400 ford. I'm a fan of hi end carbs on decent engines. engines are a air pump and any restriction on a air pump takes away from its efficiencys. ran this very truck you had for many yrs and was a blast but expensive until I started upgrading. catch you later.:-X2. Kinda overkill but had the parts and decided to build. any questions drop a message and will help. 2v heads can work with some port work and a little compression and nice cam and your 400 will have a new attitude!!!!! in my photo is a 1977 f-150 4wd. Its not a f-150 anymore and I don't break much anymore. Had this truck since 1985. highschool to daily driver to mudracer to current my huntin rig on 40" hawgs. I'm very familiar with the old trucks. Had some others but this one is personal. It had a 335 351m to 400 to 460 to 509 to 521 to current 472. catch you later!

Definitely do everything you suggested in your first post. What sort of heads/pistons (?) this will make a difference to cam etc. The truck avengers aren't very user friendly apparently. I am under the impression that they are not very adjustable/tuneable and have been built to a budget. They will not be a carb you could dust off after sitting on a shelf 20 years later and rebuild like the old school Holley carbies. I will also stand corrected on that if some-one has a differing opinion from hard experience. Like other posts on this forum there is a lot of thoughts between all the differing Holleys, Edelbrocks and Motorcrafts etc. so good luck with that. If you have any personal experience for one over another than that may be a good starting point.
