I'm going to work at a local Ford dealership and I will be the diesel tech there. I have been working on diesels for years but do not have much experience with the Powerstrokes, and thats why I took this job to learn more. I've been working for GM recently and seen my share of Duramax and have worked on Cummins on the side. I'm just curious as to what are some of the major/common problems you see with Powerstroke diesels? I guess I'll see over time, but I just wanted to get a heads up on things. All I know is that the variable geometry turbos on the 6.0s have a bad rep from what I've heard. Any info and heads up would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance!
I would just start reading thru all the different threads. There is so much out there to learn. You will obviously need to become familiar with the 7.3, the 6.0, the 6.4, and the new 6.7. I would take a look at all the various sections of the forum and just start digging around.
no there is one other guy thats been there about 15 years but they are getting overwhelmed with diesel work because they have a lot of fleet work so they needed another one.
Like jstnromero said, go to the separate diesel engine forums here and they will send you to graduate school. Each forum covers one of the engines or main year grouping. Look through some of the major issues they cover and you will have a great overview of the things that present a problem on each engine.
Welcome to FTE. Glad to have you here. EGR issues are popular on the 03 and newer trucks. Head bolts that stretch and blow head gaskets on the 6.0, the radiator issues on the 6.4, I doubt you see many 7.3's at the dealer, but loose UVCH connectors and the recall CPS causing contribution fault codes on #3 & #8 injectors.
As mentioned, there's more engine specific info down in the diesel engine subcategories you can read up on, or hopefully start adding new threads and comments on.
