98 Expedition heater

I recently purchased a 98 Expedition 4x4. My problem is the heater is only putting out warm air at best. After driving for a while and hitting some bumps it will get a little warmer but not Ford heater hot. (We all know how hot that can be). If anybody has any ideas please let me know. I've been told it could be the blending door? Could this be a faulty therostat?

Could be your heater core is plugged.

Considering that hitting bumps affects the heat temperature output, I would agree that this is a broken blend door issue.

How is the blend door operated? With a cable or electric?

It's moved by an electric motor/modulator. Usually the problem is the pivot points on the blend door itself break. This requires the dash to be removed in order to replace the door with the upgraded parts. There is a quick fix by heatertreater that some have used. Do a search in this forum for either heatertreater or blend door and you will find many threads on the subject.

I have another question. I have the duel air/heat for the passanger compartment. I seen in my repair manual that I have two blowers and two heater coors. Do you know if I have two blending doors? I haven't tried to see if the rear of the SUV gets hot.

You have three blend doors. One in front for hot/cold, one in back for hot/cold and one in back for floor/ceiling. Your issue seems to be the front based on what you've told us so far. As pointed out, the front tends to break at the axle of the door itself, the ones in the back tend to break the gears in the acutator that move the door and make a pretty distincitve thump when they are broken.

I've only checked the front. I was just thinking if one door controlled everything and the back was getting hot if I could narrow the problem down easier. I'm going to take her to shop very soon and have it checked. I have a few other things that need to be done including a tranny so I'm hoping they will cut me a break if I have it all done at once

The three are not interconnected. The dealer doing the blend door is going to be expensive - the dash comes out the way they do it. Others here have DIY'd it that way, and there are also people here who have bought an aftermarket kit that goes in through the back of the glove box opening.

I checked the rear heater and it's doing the same as the front luke warm air. This was set to rear panel I did not check the rear floor. Does this mean it can be something besides the the doors? What are the chances that they all go bad at the same time? If I do have a shop do the work it WILL NOT be a dealer

Is your engine coming up to full operating temperature?

Temp gauge is going between 1/4 to 1/2. I can always change the thermostat. I can always change the thermost, not like that will break the bank or take mor than 30 min to change.

The fill tank is full. I'm going to start looking at it more tomorrow after work. Hate to take it to the shop if I can find something minor. Has anybody ever seen all of the doors go at the sametime. This could have been an old issue since I did by it used.
