Where is the instrument cluster voltage regulator located,I found one underneath the dash but it doesn't have the right connections. The only guage that works is the oil pressure.
The regulator is on the back of the gauge cluster itself. It mounts with one small bolt. Once you remove the bolt, you then disconnect it from the circuit film on the back of the cluster; it connects with connections just like a 9-volt battery.
Have you made sure the sending unit wires are connected? If they're not, the unhooked gauges wouldn't work. If I recall, the red wire with a white stripe is for water temp, and the white wire with a red stripe is for oil pressure. Both should have little push-on boots that look like spark plug wire ends.
The CHARGE gauge -should- move just a bit when you crank your truck. But from what I've read on here, it's not uncommon for the charge gauges to not work anymore. As to why, I don't know.
I don't know if a bad regulator would cause some gauges to work but others to not work though. Usually it'll cause them all to read too high or too low, or not at all. I'd check your circuit film for damage too.
Thanks, the guage that I want to get working is the fuel, there's already a temp guage hooked up and I could care less about the voltmeter. The truck has dual tanks so I'd like to know whether or not the selector is working. It's an '85 150 lariat xlt. 351/c6
To test your fuel gauge: With the key in ACC or RUN (engine not running), remove the
wire from the gas tank sending unit and ground it to the frame or other good ground; the
gauge should swing fully to one direction (probably F). Unground ther wire, it should
swing fully to the other direction.
If that test passes, the wiring & gauge are working.
