How well does the Torqshift tranny match up performance wise to the Allison tranny in 3/4 or 1 ton pickups? My bro-inlaw says his duramax-Allison combo performs much better in towing/payload applications than any Torqshift-powerstroke combo! Please help me set him straight.....His truck is a 2010 2500hd cc Z71, duramax, with 3.73 gear ratio.
My dad has owned a chevy dealership for most all my life, yet I drive a Ford. It really depends on your own personal experience which combo you'd prefer. They are both good and both have their issues.
No comparison go with the 6spd manual. I drive a 07 3500 for repo truck ( i didnt buy it) and the Allison is the only thing worth owning on the entire truck besides the wheel lift. But it doesnt hold a candle to my 2000 7.3 with the 6 spd hanging off the back.
My opinion, having driven LOTS of miles with the Allison on both 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, is that you really can't say much bad about it. It's 1 thing that GM has that may be good enough to bolt on to a Ford truck.
Now, I would not say anything negative about the Ford 5R100 or the new 6R100 either.
Well all I can really say is push 500 hp through that Allison and see how long she takes it. Do the same thing to a 5R100 and compare the results. The 6R140 is too new and aggressive 6.7 tuning is not available yet, so we don't know for sure what it's capable of. I can't imagine Ford going backwards on the trans since it's never been the case in the past (except maybe C6 to E4OD).
The 6R140 has all the features that the Allison boys have been crowing about for a few years now, so that advantage is gone. Ask your buddy how well his live PTO works!
Tell your brother to hook up some a mildly powerful 100hp or so tune on his truck and his Allison wont last long. They are good a Good trans however they need to built A lot sooner then a Torque-shift would.
