Help - Paint Experts, coding for Oxford White

I'm getting my door, fender, and hood repainted, factory code is Z1 Oxford White. The PPG book at the shop lists a single mix for Z1 and YZ paint codes, and I know they are not the same. My code, Z1, is a bright white and YZ is a creamier white with a grey/tan tone to it. Did PPG drop the ball on this? Can anyone get me the correct mixtures for each so I can show the shop? Thanks!

It also depends on who the paint comes from...That's another code on your door. Sherwin-Williams and Dupont both make paint for Ford, and there WILL BE a difference if the wrong one is used. Take it from someone who had a "Zinc Yellow" Sport-Trac that got some body work done....

Do you mean the brand of the OEM paint or of the aftermarket? The mix code is PPG so I ASSumed that was the paint they were using.

brd7666, I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at. I said in my original post that I knew there were multiple codes. My question is regarding the proper mix and why PPG lists both YZ and Z1 as the same color.

The YZ and the Z1 may be the code telling you who made the paint. They are different. BTDT, and wish I hadn't BTDT. Give me a few minutes, and I'll find the info for it hopefully.

I think Z1 is when they switched to Waterbourne, but I've seen both OEM side by side and the YZ is a creamier white, Z1 is brighter. The compo mix PPG lists doesn't match OEM Z1 well, but it matches YZ.

The codes depend on where it was made, and also if it is two toned.

Sherwin-Williams colors E-BODYSHOPSUPPLIES.COM LLC-AMERICA'S #1 BODY SHOP SUPPLIER - FORD

Ford Code Ditzler Dupont

2003 Ford Oxford White YZ X M6466 4289 B9145

If the formatting came through, you either have Ditzler or Dupont as the manufacturer. they will have differences in the color/composition. Z1 is oxford white, but on the mustangs if you look at the bottom of the following page...

2003 Ford Paint Color Codes - Ford Paint Cross-Reference

Formatting didn't go through...Ford# is M6466...Ditzler# is 4289 and Dupont# is B9145. Again, YZ is oxford white on your truck, and Z1 is Oxford White on a Mustang.

Thanks for the links. Those all show Z1 and YZ as a different mix. So it looks like the PPG chart is wrong saying they are the same.

trust me i spray Ford colors all day..

YZ (which is on my truck is def a different formula then Z1)..

if the shop is trying to sell you on a single formula for both get your paint elsewere..

at work i have a bunch of variants of each color YZ, and Z1.. but even teh number 1 standard for each is vastly different..

Z1 is a much cleaner white compared to YZ.. i wish my truck were Z1 actualy as i prefer that color to my older YZ

Thanks Fordfanatic4life. They have actually painted it already, and it doesn't match. They showed me their PPG book which listed one code for both Z1 and YZ. I'll bring this all back to them, but they pretty much have their heels dug in and I'll more than likely have to take them to small claims court.

You are DEAD WRONG!. Not saying your sportrac didnt get painted the wrong color, but the manufacturer of the aftermarket paint makes no difference. The factory paint doesnt come from any aftermarket paint company. All aftermarket paint (ppg, dupont, sherwin williams, speis hector, valspar, martin senior, etc) is designed for a perfect factory match. I use dupont and can tell you that most paint codes have 3 or 4 variations with in them. The only way to pick the correct variation is with the vin number.

The part numbers you list are simply those manufacters part numbers for the aftermarket paint color YZ, not any idication of what paint is on the vehicle from the factory....

All aftermarket paint companies have different grades of paint. I will use Dupont as an example, but ppg is simialr. The lower dupont is called "nason" and it only comes in one variaton for a color code. If you asked for a quart of nason in Z1 you would get just that. Chromabase is their higher line. If you asked for a quart of z1 in chromabase it would bring up probably 4-5 variations in the computer and ask for a vin. After typing in the vin it would pick the correct one based on several things such as what factory it was built in or what variaton of that code.

Nason would be used for an all over paint job or alot of times for things like bed covers at truck acc shops becuase they dont think youll know the difference. If you are doing a repair with a blend or where two panels meet and it must match you have to use the chromabase to get a match.

PPG has a similar systm and it sounds like the shop is useing the lower paint that isnt meant for blending or matching. (you would be surprised how many shops do this as the chaper paint can sometimes be 5 or 6 times cheaper). Like I stated previously the brand of the aftermarket paint makes NO DIFFERENCE.

Sorry I couldnt be more help on the specifics of PPG as its been a few years since ive painted with it, but hopefully you got an idea whats going on.
