I have zero experience with this gen of ford trucks, but i'll be picking up one tomorrow. The truck I'm getting is either an '00 or '01, good running 4.2L, 4x4 standard cab. The body is in overall nice shape, but the front bumper is gone, the bags have been blown in it and the trans is junk. When the previous owner purchased the truck only reverse worked, but now it doesn't move period. I had orginally planned on putting a trans in it and maybe flipping it. However, it seems the transmissions are fairly pricey for this gen truck. I'm not sure of resale value, since they seem to range from $1k - 5k+ in my area. Are these really worth the investment of time and money to fix or would I be better off parting it out? I'm not into the truck for much money at all, but don't want that to be the reason to go for broke on it. Thanks ahead of time.
You will probably be looking at 3-4k +/- to get it back running right. You will be looking at 1-1.5k for the trans, roughly the same for the airbags and associated sensors, and 3-500 for the front bumper, Also you MIGHT be looking at replacing the seat belts if they have the automatic tensioners that lock the belts tight in an accident. I personally would think of parting it, as you said you can get them for 1-5k, and those most likely were not wrecked. Does yours have a salvage title? If so that will severely hurt the resale value. Unless you want to fix and run it till its deader than dead, I don't think it will be financially reasonable for you to fix and re-sell.
The title hasn't been branded. The only cost saving measures I'd have is that I will be doing the work myself and would be using mostly junkyard parts. I'm leaning closer to to parting it out. It seems every time I see one of these in the junkyards they're stripped in a matter of days... then again, part of me hates sending Ford trucks to their death.
