Second Gen Explorer - things to watch for

Well, since I posted my thread about buying a third gen explorer, the finances have taken a turn for the worse. Looks like a Second gen (1995-2001) explorer is more realistic for me. The First Gen is probably a little too far back and not significantly cheaper around here.
Link to the previous thread if anyone is interested.

That being said, what should I look for and look out for? Some of these rigs have pretty high miles, 100k to 250k miles. any maintenance issues I need to double check on?
Obviously trucks of this age and mileage will be showing some wear and tear. I'm not terribly worried about cosmetic issues, but brakes, suspension and transmission problems are a top priority for me.

Some expedition, tahoe, yukon and similar are in my price range, so we'll see what shows up. I have a couple FTE Alberta chapter stickers sitting around, so it'll probably be a Ford.

Pretty much the same for all: V6 cam chains, 5 speed auto, diff noise. Nickle and dime items for all. (lock switches, the maze of hoses on the 4.0, heater valve, parking brake)

Check:

Most info is accurate, beware, it's Wiki...

A 5.0 V8 model will have a better trans, and AWD. Mountaineers are all this way. IMO, that would be one to look into.

They are tippy, twitchy drivers, but tires and shocks have a lot to do with that, and once you get used to them, they are ok.

The GM units have their issues, like eating tires in some cases, and the Expy spits plugs from the 5.4 in this age range.

I have a '98 XLT 4x4, 4.0. My trans and diff were "fixed" under my ESP. I've had the little stuff fixed, including a new radiator, all within the last 20k. My independent (former Ford dealer techs) mechanic says all the stuff that goes wrong has already happened, so not to worry. (as he rings up another $600....)

I think the way to buy here is to find a 5.0 V8 job with a good service/care history, drive a good bargain, and keep your credit card open and you AAA card up-to-date, and drive with pride.
