service engine code / glow plug communication issue?
Greetings. I have been getting a periodic service engine light on my 2000 7.3 that when checked at the local auto parts store showes PO83 code, glow plug module control to ECM communication circut fault, it gives a possible explanation as a dignostic line open or short circuit condition or faulty gpcm or ecm fault.
The engine seems to fire up fine so I believe the glow plugs are doing their job. If anyone has any advice on what to do about this I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Josh
IIRC, If your truck has the GPCM and if it senses a glow plug that is dead, it will throw a code and light the SES on the dash. You can still fire up the truck with one or even three (like my truck had) glowplugs out without too much struggles.

Opps, the code was PO683. The truck is not chipped now but the previous owner used an edge evolution I think and then removed it when I bought it.
It makes sense that one or more plugs could be bad and it would still fire up but according to the code reader from the autoparts store its showing a "communication fault". Would a bad glow plug show up as this or as a bad plug?
Another piece of info. that may or may not be related is that after firing it up if I dont give it a few moments to warm up its a little sluggish for just a few seconds. I'm not sure if thats related or just normal as this is my first diesel.
Thanks guys, any help is appreciated. I'm not a mechanic but I'd like to try to fix this myself if I can get some direction.
Josh
OK, normally chain autoparts store code readers do not adequately read our diesel truck codes. So you may be chasing a problem with your GP system that isn't real. A diesel shop or maybe a member here with an AE (Auto Enginuity software) can scan your truck for you to see what your real problem is.
Yes, a little sluggish on cold mornings is normal. There's an exhaust back pressure valve that closes on cold mornings to put a load on the engine to aid in faster warm-ups. You drive with that valve still closed or not open all the way, it feels like you are dragging an anchor behind the truck. If it clears up in a few minutes, then you are fine. It's the truck doing it's job.
Thanks You just cleared up a question i had about my 7.3 2001 being sluggish in the mornings. After it runs for a bit it runs fine. Butch Rankin. Jees i LOVE this forum.
