i know people normally go from 2wd to 4wd, but i have a rust free shortbed single cab f150, with the worst drive-train ever. 4.6, 4R70, 8.8 with drums. all with 265k miles on it. the motor is tired, the tranny is dying and the rear brakes need to be rebuilt. i was thinking......i REALLY want a lightning. i cant afford a real one, so ill build a clone. are there any frame differences between a 2wd and a 4wd? i know i need new lower/upper control arms, new transmission, the coil over mounts and stuff like that.
if it were that easy, i wouldnt be asking for help. there arent any rolled trucks around here. 97-03s are rare around here, and 2x4s are even more rare. a short bed 2x4 is extremely rare, and a rolled 2x4 is impossible to find.
at my local pick and pull, theres only one 97-03 f150, and one expedition. out of over 1000 fords.
Drop a Lightning motor and blower in, build the tranny, lower it, and build something you don't see every day. 4WD would launch a hell of a lot better than a 2WD, plus you can drive it in the snow.
I'd go that route with my truck if I didn't think lowering a 4x4 went against nature...
i honestly considered that, but like you, i think lowering a 4x4 is against nature, and id like to handle better on the roads. i only need 4x4 for the harsh winters here, and id like a nice cruiser for when im down at the shore house or cruising around town. i can pick up a cheap 4x4, but im not dumping 20k at one time for a lightning.
If you did go with about a 1-2" drop it would be easy to go back to stock--crank the torsion bars down and remove the factory block. Maybe some stiffer shocks up front...
If on a budget you could get a salvage yard motor with lower mileage and do a few bolt ons (catback, headers, cold air intake, etc) maybe even cam it and port the heads. Not exactly a lightning, but definately would make a fun truck for cruisin'.

I pretty much did just that, But I still have the 4X4 frame. Unfortunately I'm stuck with the 4X4 suspension up front.
The frames are different and there's to much fab work involved to put a 2X4 front end under it.
I took out the front diff,T-case, tranny. Lowered it 3" in the front and 4" in the back.
Put in a build Lightning motor, built 4R100 trans and custom 2 piece drive-shaft.
I've been looking for a 2X4 single cab, short bed for a wile to put my motor and tranny in.
