1:00am this morning, oily cold fingers, glow plug slipped and went down the push rod hole on the #5 cylinder...I pulled the push rod out but can't see it. Anybody know how far it could have gone? Of course it had to be the #5 where I can't see it. Will I just need to do some creative fishing or could it have fallen deep?
By all means get it out. You can try a magnet and fish it out. it might of fell sideways laying across the lifters. that could be fun to get out.Hope You don't have to pull the heads and intake. Good luck
Would it help to pull the push rods from #3? If it laying crossways, it may be easier to see from there. My biggest question is can it fall deeper into the engine through an oil passage or something?
Take your time no matter what you do. If you have a small bright flashlight I would take the push rods out of 2 and 3 like you suggested and look down the hole to see if you can locate it. You may be able to fish it out with an telescoping magnet, the one that looks like a car radio antenna. It wont be easy because it will want to stick to everything it touches.
Since you can't get your head in there, grab a digital camera and hold it over the hole and start snapping pictures. Put the pics on a computer and see if you can zoom and find out if you can see the glow plug so you know where to fish.
Go to your local auto parts store and ask for a flexible led inspection light. They look like a mini mag flashlight (2AA batteries)with about a 10" flexible neck on them with a 1/4" or less led light on the end. I think it was made by performance tool. I use mine like crazy for everything and I think it was like 10 clams or less. Here is what it looks like:
One tip on the magnet is if you can wrap some masking tape around the sides so it doesnt grab everything when you are trying to slide it through the hole. Hope that helps and you can get it out. The digi cam picture thing is cool as well never thought of that.
It was laying behind the head gasket out of sight...removed 4 rocker arms, 1 injector, and the valve cover gasket/harness. Used a telescoping magnet (the kind with a swivel probably wouldn't have worked) and my college student son figured it out. About of hour of gymnastics and one-eyed peeking he pulls it out. The final attack only took him about 30 seconds. High fives to Spencer. I could use a cold one right now.
The threaded (plug-in end) is magnetic...the heater end is much less magnetic. Funny you mentioned the flexible grabber, I was standing behind him preparing it for the next try...pick it up with the magnetic to make it visible and grabbing it. I learned to just stay out of his way when it comes to puzzles.
