Possibly getting an Excursion and have a question...
The wife and I have been looking into getting an Excursion because of our growing family. She wants one that has a regular gas engine however, I want to have one with a diesel.
She would agree to the diesel but the question we have about it is how you can use it and by that I mean, is it something you can start up and run to the grocery store thats 2 minutes away and come back?
From what I have always known, you can not do that with a diesel, especially if its a turbo diesel. Has this changed so you can run it like you would a normal gas engine or do you have to run it for a while.
Please help out because this is the only thing holding us up on getting one
I cannot speak to the excursion but I have had many diesels over the years and driven many while in the Army. I have heard this but I have always driven them as I would any other car or truck and never had any issue.
Also, I have never seen anything regarding this in the owners manual.......however I am no technician.

Depending on where you live, you may also have to plug in the diesel overnight, one of the things that my wife was arguing against when looking at the v10 for the diesel.
If you search, typically the diesels like to warm up for a while before running, which may take as long as the 5-10 minute trip if you just hop in a gasser and go. Also, mileage may not be that much better just banging around town, the mileage increase of value is long highway hauls.
But no doubt about it, th diesels have the cool factor, but is it worth the cool to pay the extra up front for cost as well as increased maintenece costs.
Someone on here said it nicely, if you don't really need a diesel only get one if you are looking for a hobby (do the maint yourself and fix tinker with)
I live in the country so I do know what short trips to the store are. The diesel is more expensive to maintain but you get better mileage. It sounds like you need a gasser. Beware of any Ex when you stop to fuel up, it is not hard to put $100+ in the tank.

If your in Florida, California or Arizona my 6.0 fires right up and goes to the store and so has every other Diesel I've owned! I don't know where the rumors come from on the whole issue of having to drive many miles and get them up to full temps before shutting them down??? Have always done it!
If your not towing get the V10, it sucks gas but oh well! The Diesels are awesome and superior if towing no question!!! If it's a daily driver family cruiser go V10. UNLESS: you are driving tons and tons of miles, if that's the case the higher mpg's of the Diesel could pay you back in the long term!
Good Luck!
sounds like the v10 is the best option for you, you did not mention towing anything huge and even a v10 will tow well. but i may be bias lol
I did forget to mention that. Due to my work and areas we have lived, we move a lot (10 times in 6 years) and we always rented a moving truck from U-Haul or whoever. That was my biggest reason for getting a diesel truck since I know I could have the family in the truck and still be able to pull something with all of our crap in it.
Also, how reliable are the v10 models? I found quite a few for sale that all of them have 150k to 200k miles on them. Should I be worried about that even if they come with a complete maintenance history?
the V10 is dead on reliable, some of the earlier ones have a possible plug spitting issue, and exhaust manifold studs. otherwise you'll be hardpressed to find a downside to the V10, other then the 8-10mpg city to 10-14mpg highway which i dont mind, considering what i've just been through with my excursion i think it really saved me from more personal injury then i got.
i've had 2 V10s, first was a '04 that i got with 80k miles on it and sold with almost 100k on it. only thing i did was change oil and fill it up on gas. the second is my current '00 V10 that i got with 118k on it and now has 121k and i had to replace the stock alternator which at that many miles i consider normal maint.
I love my diesel but it's not for everybody. If you like diesel, get one! Don't talk yourself into one...there's very little difference between them in most areas but I love my diesel and the ability to make crazy safe power( with mods) and tow without any thought to my trucks abilities. I also like the mileage.
Btw You only need to idle the truck when you have been driving hard or towing heavy for a while and the egt's get a bit high. Even then i only idle for around 2-3 minutes and it cool right down. Most stocker trucks won't get hot at all on a short trip to the store. Remember, every service vehicle from postal to construction guys use diesel. Stop and go traffic and short trips are no problem for gas or diesel.
Stick to a diesel. It gets great mpg, can tow a house down, and the resale is amazing. The gas Ex's are a dime a dozen. You will never regret a diesel.

Unless you haveto drop atleast $2000 pluis in repairs, which I hope never happens.
We are looking for an Excursion also. I would like an 05 6.0 2wd. Test drove one the other day with 60K miles which the oasis report came back as no work being done to it but on the test drive the check engine light came on and the truck wouldn't go. Still ran but just had no power. Any ideas?
We want the diesel for the MPG's and to tow our boat.

I also was hesitant on purchasing a Diesel. However, I knew the previous owner of my X and it was his Wife's daily driver around town. I pulled the trigger and got the 7.3, 6 months later I am still happy on my decision. For the most part my driving habits have not changed (i try to keep the RPM's below 2k, to maximize my mpg's). If you live in the cold part of the country, you may have to plug in the heater at night or it may take longer for the Glow plugs to warm up.
The biggest challenge I have found is learning about the components that make the diesel run. The system is much different than a gasoline engine.
However, this site is a wealth of information and if one is mechanically inclined and has some time, you can learn a lot about the diesel engine.
Good luck on whatever decision you make, but either way if you go Diesel of Gas, the X is one awesome vehicle.
I have an04 6.0 f250 cc 4x4(my 2nd) and have had all of the 6.0 problems, now that they are fixed life is good. I useemy truck as a mini van, many short trips and errands, this is fine on a 6.0 as long as the EGR is deleted. I get13-15 around town. When we decided to get an X for my wife this year the choice came down to simple math v10 01 xlt 4x4 111k miles 8000$, similar 7.3 or 6.0 psd x 18000$ plus 3-7k$ to upgrade. after having the v10 x for a couple months I find that I get 10mpg around town running the same trips that I normally use my psd for. Compared to the pickups, where v-10s are relatively scarce, v 10 Xs are more common(at least for sale) and priced way lower, in fact I believe that I could buy a gas powered X and install a 12v cummins for less than the purchase price of a similar 7.3 X. On the other hand nothing would beat a fully fixed 6.0 X for long distance travel.
