I have the opportunity to purchase a 1971 F-250 4X4 for $500.00. My cousin currently own this truck. It has a 360 4 speed with 36,000 on the truck. The body is alright, no bed, new inner fenders, needs rust repair on cab, but is all there interior wise. The best part about this truck is that my grandfather owned it. He bought it used in 1973 and sold it to my unkle in 1977, when I was born. I have the reciept when he sold it. My grandfather died in 1979.
The problem is: My wife dosen't understand why I need another Truck. I have a 76 f350 supercab that is my daily driver. That needs some work as well. We don't have a lot of extra time and money laying around for this other truck. How do I convince her of the importance of this truck? Living in upstate NY, I tried the 4x4 route, but she thinks it is not worth the costs of this truck.
please help!!!
Also, what are the important things I should check on this truck to make sure it is worth repair. What are strong or weaak points of this generation of fords?
The short answer is "your both right". I also think your cousin wants to much for this truck. See if he will come down a bit for "family" sake? Then put the truck in storage for now. Scrounge around for the parts you need and over time your wife will see that this is important to you and her resistance will lessen. When you are ready to put the truck back on the road, sell the 350. A snow plow would make a great accessory for the 71, and you could earn a few bucks plowing driveways? I've been married nearly 40 years to the same woman. I have learned that it is easier to compromise than fight. Good luck!
Believe me, if you fight over this and you buy it anyway you will hear about it constantly. About how much time you spend, money, and anytime you have a problem with it.
Is your cousin in a hurry to sell it? If not, let him know youd like to have first shot at buying it before he sells it to someone else, but that you just arent ready now. It probly isnt depreciating much as it is, whats a couple more years?
This way she wins for now, and you live to fight annother day.
$500 too much to ask for a 1971 F-250 4X4 for!?!? I don't care if it has a bed or not thats a killer deal. Snap it up. How to sell it to the wife? Play up the sentimental angle with Grampa...what was said was right, its not worth the grief if she won't sign off on it though. So play off the sentimental angle, or the investment angle.....heck, I'd pay $1000 for that thing to just have a trail toy.
