loose yolk?
I got a 82' F250 and I have noticed that a very pronounced shimmy is occuring while accelerating from 45mph to 55mph and the vibration becomes worse when I allow the engine to do the braking in that speed range before coming to stop. I am guessing that either the yolk is loose or its the u-joint or even the differential...never worked on any of these components b4 so I'm looking for some guidance and troubleshooting info.

Park on level ground, put it in neutral, crawl underneath and try to turn the driveshaft. You will probably find some play. Mine needs a front u-joint and vibrated similar to what you describe.
Are you sure it may not be a wheel/tire that lost its balance weights?

i am not 100% sure that it isn't the tires but I am kind of doubting it as the tires have been replaced in the last 8 months with new 10 ply nylons... will try your suggestions on looking for paly and let you know.

I put the truck in nuetral and tried to turn the driveshaft and I was able to move it back and forth about 1 1/2 " in each direction. there was also some play just rear of the hanger when I push the dirveshaft up and down. So where do I go from here?
