I am new to this Forum, and have gotten some really good details off here. Now I jsut want to check my ideas. My 2001 F-350 CC DRW has a few electrical problems; Wipers will not turn off and if you turn them on to high the washer comes on (Pull the fuse, relay 33, relay 34, or relay 35 is the only way besides turning off the key to stop). The electric lock "bump" when you push the button, but they do not actually move into the other position. If you continually push the button, it sounds like they run out of power. The fog lights will not come on, even with new bulbs. I have replaced the wiper motor, wiper switch, and I am now ready to chang the GEM. I just wanted to see if anyone agreeded the GEM is the problem? Thanks.
I do have history with the door locks, well passenger side anyway. It took 2 or 3 times to make it come all the way up, this was an 02 and it started in 09 I guess. When I replaced my speakers I found the plastic door panel was rubbing on the lock shaft. I took a really sharp pocket knife and opened the hole a bit and problem solved.
Might not hurt to check because after so many years stuff just shifts.
The fog lights can be a fuse or the switch itself. Again after so many years stuff just starts to wear out. I guess I'd check the fog light fuse or relay first, then ohm out the switch or check for voltage at the switch.
I can't speak directly to a 2001, because I don't have one, nor the service manual for one.
But I doubt there is that much difference between the 01 and the 04. The only thing the GEM is involved with that you are having problems with is the door locks. And even then, door lock actuators seem to be a common failure point, and your GEM is trying to activate them, even if they aren't actually working.
So I'm not sure I would get in too big a hurry to change out an expensive GEM.
I don't have many suggestions as to your problems. The door lock actuators seem to be pretty problematic. You can search on lock actuators and you should find quite a bit of information. I've not seen many people complaining about wipers or fog lights.
I dont have any experience pertaining to the electricals in these trucks yet but just an idea, if you are having an issue with multiple electrical components do you have an VOM/DMM to check things out? Maybe your power bus isnt getting the right voltage. I'm not sure if these components are on the same bus or not, but if you have a bad connection to either 12V or ground weird things can start happening.
Hi Skeithly..... I was also on a goose chase with my fog lamps. (Factory installed on 2003 f250 6.1) I checked everything with a volt/ohm meter. I did not really FIND the problem, but after removing and metering and cleaning the contacts on the relays in the black plastic box located under the hood directly left of the master brake cylinder, the fog lamps work perfectly. Hope you find your gremlin. dd
Welcome to the forum,! You might have some luck down in the electrical forum. Stick around, you'll be glad you did.
