Computer reset / emissions test

Hi, I've got a 1999 ranger with a 4 cylinder with a manual trans. Recently I had no power when trying to start it. The motorcraft magic battery eye was red and it didn't seem to take a charge. It was original equipment and 11 years is pretty good battery life. So I just got a new one. Still no start. I got a rebuilt starter and installed it and bang she starts right up. I live in Southeast Wisconsin and my plates expire end of Oct. This year I needed the emission test. I go and they ask me if I've had work done on the truck because the test won't run. I say yes, I lost power. They tell me I have to put about 100 miles on it normal driving to reset the computer or whatever. Is this true? Is there anyway around this? I'm out of work and with the cost of the battery and starter and now I'm supposed to waste money just driving around to put miles on it? Any info/help would be great.

I think it's more a certain number of successful starts rather than miles. Someone here will know the number.

Yup, in order to pass an emissions test, the computer has to see enough driving to make sure everything works. That is around 100 miles.

Gotta love computers.....sorry, it IS a matter of miles driven plus start/warm-up cycles.

yes there is a way around just driving it. if you or a friend has a generic code reader you can tell if all the testing items are 'ready'.
just scan it, or you could go to autozone and they should scan it for free.
good luck.
by the way, 11 years life on a battery is incredibly long.

My last battery was good for about 4 or 5 years..better that the one that came in my '02..almost time for a new one.I wonder if a new computer will "see" my code key?

You need to complete a "drive cycle" as defined by Ford: Ford Motor Company Driving Cycle
