Frickin frackin belt is making a racket. 204k miles on my 2002. JUST changed the alternator last week. I thought the noise was just the alternator bearings but alas it wasn't. Its still making a squeaking noise. The belt and tensioner are maybe 4000 miles old. Quite new.
I haven't ever changed the water pump, idler pulley or AC fan clutch. (I suppose its time.)
Here is a video of my motor before changing the failed alternator and then after new alternator. Truck isnt losing coolant. I did wash the motor a few weeks ago with all manner of harsh engine cleaners but TRIED to avoid the belt. This may be the culprit of the noises. I cant remember if the noise was happening before I washed the engine. GOD, I'm getting old!
Belt noise with failed alternator (actually its mostly a horrid metallic bearing noise I assume):
[QUOTEtexkenUSMC;15486996]I have a problem with my belt wearing on the front edge and making a whiping sound every so often around 65mph. I have replaced the tensioner, idler, water pump and the a/c clutch and bearing. It is still doing it. Anyone ever have this problem.
Make sure that whipping sound isn't a loose strand of belt! That can reek havoc under the hood!
Is your fan clutch locked up?[/QUOTE]
It does spin but slower and with no torque most of the time.. When the clutchs internals reach a certain temp it engages and spins 100% of the time like the alternator. I could not spin the fan by hand with the truck turned off.

Wowie. This is good info. Mine spins like a madman all the time...maybe its stuck? Its a like a howling windstorm even when the engine is stone cold.
I need to add this to my list of parts to change now that I'm at 204k miles
-water pump
-thermostat
-idler pulley bearings
-fan clutch
-maybe AC fan clutch
-coolant temp sensor
-coolant
-hoses
I will go for "lack of tension": try this, put 2 waschers on each screw at the Generator base, to tension the belt a litle more, if the sound disapears. buy a schorter belt and take the waschers away. cheap & easy. My belt was soo tigth I had to instalit before I tigth the generator screws
Mi belt sound ocasionaly, but my tensioner screw broke too many times. so I decide to do the job my self, Find out several isues 1) te base were the tensor sits was holding precarius, one screw was misinng, anoder wass lose, 2) the air smog pump was hard to turn (also was disconected, no hoses) las time y bougt a new tensor wich lasted til my first atempt to override another car on a stept road, the screw on the tensor broke, and "the mule" hardly broght me back home. hands on the job, bougt 3 new screws to hold the base to de Motor block, repeaced the broken screw on the tensor and re-routed the belt ( 98 inch I.ll try to atacch the graphic ) as a result the belt soun loud and clear so I used 2 waschers on each generator suport to increase tension and it´s working alwrite.
Sorry friends, the new route does not work, I had to repace the Smog pum and put the old 100 inch belt back , cant find the replacement part here in Venezuela so I had to "tear it down" put new bearings on it remove everything but the axle & the pulley and pay 20 bucks for the job to a metal shop bearings ware welded too the body had to use an hydraulic press to dismantle the old bearings, and break one wen assembling the pump again.
I had a similar squeak to what you are seeing, but not as loud. I replaced the tensioner and the top idler pulley and it purrs like a large kitten now. I also swapped out the belt and am keeping the old one as a "on road" spare if needed.
