Oil pan woes

Ok so I went to the dealership today to get my oil changed. Besides desperately needing tires, they informed me that my oil pan is rusting out. Not surprised... They told me it wouldn't be covered under my warranty that I bought when I bought the truck because its an "enviromental effect." I obviously can't afford to have them pull the motor and replace the pan. Just bought a house and with a baby on the way, money is tight. So what are my options for keeping it from getting worse. I know about POR-15 and Rust Bullet, but what other options are out there? Thanks guys!

there was a thread the other day that had a video of a guy with a fiberglass repair deal. I can't find it but I know I've seen it. It's on you-tube or something. Might be something to get you by for a while.

Pretty cool vids. Sorry to hear Chris, it couldn't come at a worse time especially an oil pan, good luck. As far as the Por-15 and R-B, it won't fix an already close to leaking pan but if theres just major rust bubbles and no holes you might be able to prep and coat and you might just luck out.

Defintly look Chris but be careful, if the bubbles look superficial then try to sand a bit but if the holes have seepage then that repair kit might be nessesary. If you can sand the whole pan without any leakage the Por-15 or Rust Bullet will work fine. When it dries it dehydrates the rusty metal, takes the moisture out of the metal-rust as you will, good stuff. Find out soon, these treatments are only good with mild to warn weather unless you have a garage.

As mentioned above, POR15 or Rust Bullet are great. But even just hitting the pan with a couple coats of paint in a can or undercoating in a can helps a ton!! I do this before every winter and so far so good. My pan has rust bubbles but not seeping anywhere, or anywhere bad yet. Has a small leak at the gasket but thats it. Good luck

if no leaks
get the scales off.
use a rust converter
OSPHO google it.
Ace sells it.
Might have to order it in for you.
$25 per gallon.
it works
OSPHO/rust converter.
Let dry/comet cleanser, scotch brite to get remaining acid off.
JB weld (4 min) works good.
POR let dry 45 min to touch finger print on POR but no POR on finger
Rattle can (rust olem) to dull POR
Nothing will will stick to POR unless sanded, dulled out
Undercoat over POR
I used 3-M sprayable seam sealer over my pan after above.
It is like a rubber coating/seals
3M takes a special gun to do so.
Might be able to rent gun from local pant suppler.
3-M $25 .
######### If a small leak,Screw a sheet metal screw into effected area to stop leak.######
Stop leak, clean, RUST converter, JB WELD etc lke above.
JB weld is tough stuff if applied over a clean surface.
I sand blasted my PAN (it's a NO NO ) but the JB weld didn't come off were I repaired the previous year.

OSPHO check it out

Good luck
