I've read that the e99 PCM makes the truck run a bit different? Reason I ask is because I gotta brand new stinkin engine in my truck, and it still runs kinda lopey almost. Most folk probably wouldn't notice it, but I do and I think it could run a little better. So I'm not sure if that's just the way it's supposed to run, or is my PCM or CPS the issue.
I wonder if a low tranny fluid level would effect it any? I noticed that my trans was below the dip stick (guess i lost more than I thought when i disconnected my cooler for engine pull) and I felt some high freq vibes through the floor boar, got it up to mid way on dipstick and most of the vibe is gone now. I dunno- maybe I'm just being a worry wort, but after dropping over 4 grand in repairs, towing, and rebuilding, I'd say I'd be justified in worrying about any hiccup!
I don't know the code it is. I actually changed my oil tonight, and it is running a bit smoother, both in the SOTP feel and lower % #'s on my Predator.
Which PCM do you have and which one are you considering? I don't know much about changing them but I am interested also.
If you still have an E99 PCM you can't swap it out for a later PCM without getting new tunes. In my case I went from an E99 XLE4 PCM which is a model type 402 to a 2001 PMT1 PCM model type 422, and because of the difference in these model types I had to get new tunes.
The reason I went to the PMT1 was at the time Jody was better at tuning the PMT1 then the XLE4, plus the PMT1 will run the rotational velocity test, whereas the XLE4 won't. Since that time Jody has become more proficient in tuning with the XLE4. Check with DP Tuner to see if it would be worthwhile for you to switch to a newer PCM and if so which one and if they have some new XLE4 tunes.
Some say that switching from the XLE4 to a newer PCM gave them better starts and shifting but I didn't notice any real difference.
I have a ZDR3 in my e99 CA truck. It was my understanding that the computer itself is more capable in later years. Something about either more "processing" power or ability to have more detailed code.

I never thought that a later PCM would have a better CPU, and why not, at that time processing power was gainig speed in leaps and bounds.
It won't run any different with a later computer, but you do get a few benefits such as the ever so popular cruise light and better trans control, as well as more diagnostic options with AE. Jody at DP Tuner recommends the NVK4 I believe, he's not a fan of the PMT series trans strategy, at least last I talked with him about it.
I, like Clay, don't even have the cruise light in my cluster... is it an e99 thing as far as having a cruise light goes?
To the OP, I got mine so I could run rotational velocity with my AE. It also made the truck run better and shift better... it cured a few problems I had been having as well so I suspect the old XLE4 was failing to begin with. But I think the major reason for swapping is because of the more advanced diagnostics with AE. I also noticed my later PCM gave me a code for my crappy 2nd to 3rd shift (pretty much fixed by John Wood OVER THE PHONE!!! ) whereas there was nothing at all when I had the old PCM in there. But yeah, definitely worth it! I think it made my truck idle a bit better... I'd go with a NVK4, though. Jody suggested that to me because he said they were the most trouble-free PCM out there and that the PMT1 is actually hard on a stock transmission. Call Jody and he'll tell you about it!
Weird... Clay and I took lights and scanned our clusters as well as took them out and there is no legend on the cluster or socket on the back for cruise. I wonder if I could find a cluster outta a '00 and then just swap odometers so my mileage will be right?

Sounds like a lot of squeezing for a little bit of juice to me.
The reason I haven't done it yet... my truck has other things that need doing that are ALOT higher on the list (when categorized by priority) than a freakin' cruise light. But yeah, it'd be nice!
