I've recently posted threads re my fuel problem(solved here!) and getting spark from my ignition coil(could be my distributor, which I'm going to check...). In my attempt to get spark by making quick, short turns of my key, my ignition has gotten stuck a couple of times and nothing I can do can stop it from turning over until my battery goes dead. Hooked up charged battery yesterday and it still is stuck turning over. What do I need to repair or replace to stop this from happening? (I'm sure I also need to stop the quick turns of the key also....) Thanks in advance for your help.
That's actually the starter relay not the solenoid, which is on the starter itself but yeah, that relay is the culprit. A very sharp, hard whack with your fist will get it to stop for now until you can replace it.
Regards, Eric
Just pull the wire off the "S" term, if it's still cranking it's the solenoid. If not, either the ignition switch is bad or a wire is shorted in the start circuit.
Positive battery lead will go to starter relay. Should be two small terminals, one marked 'S" and the other "I". Another large lead will go to starter itself. When you turn the key it energizes relay by applying 12v to the "S" term, closing the relay and sending power to the starter. If the relay is stuck, starter will continue to run even if the voltage from switch is removed. If the ignition switch is bad it will constantly supply voltage to the relay keeping it closed. Hope this helps.
