removing dowel pins

hows the best way to remove the dowels from the block for the trans?no body around here seems to have a puller so would i just drill into the block and drive them out.tryed my best vice grips allready with no luck.just wondering how people have done it while in the truck changing from auto to 5 speed or other way around?
thanks john

I've had luck with grinding flat spots on the dowel. This allows something for the vice grips to get a good bite on them.

I have always been able to use vice grips or channel locks to grab them and twist/pull them out, but yours may be rusted in there a bit. grinding flat spots on them would help get a good bit on them like Jim said.
