I had a shop install a 302 boss engine in my truck about two years ago. When I picked it up I drove about ten miles to my home. Checked the dipstick and it reads a quart over??
I took it back to the shop he swears the only put five quarts in, I drove it for about 500 miles and changed oil and filter myself still read about a quart over. I made a file mark on the dipstick thinking it will be okay.flash forward I changed oil myself at 10 thousand miles with a new long type filter....this time it is reading 2 quarts over.!!
I drove it that way about two hundred fifty miles . Oil pressure at speed is about thirty on old style gauges, at low idle it may drop down to about 15 psi.
I took my truck to another shop hdad them put in four quarts and then they measured on target to reading full at dipstick factory calibrations. Put the fifth quart in an d now I am showing two quarts over ?????Any suggestions , comments of what is wrong
Thank you. In advance for any help you can give me,
Mike
What, if any, changes were made to your oil pan and/or dipstick? I just installed a modified larger capacity pan on a 351W and now I am not sure where the oil level should be in the pan. I posted a question about this situation some days ago with no response. In your case it sounds like dipstick is lying to you but I would run it to ground...since you have had this engine installed for 2 years I am assuming that it has not failed yet so the problem seems to be more an annoyance than anything else. Good luck...
Is this the new Coyote or the old Windsor Boss 302? Are you sure it does not have a double sump pan and only the larger sump is getting drained leaving old oil in there to continue to make your oil level rise more with every oil change. I would guess the later.
Mike... No, it does not have an oil cooler. The tube seems to be correct, he also sealed it with what looks like RVT sealer where it goes into the block.
Charlie... No changes to anything related to oil pan/dipstick.
Trucker.. It is the old Windsor Boss 302. No, it does not have the double sump pan, I had a Mustang back in 1989 and it had the two drain plugs this one is only one.
Whenever I change the oil and run the engine for a few minutes then check the oil it is clean so I doubt if there is oil left in the pan.
I bought an aftermarket dip-stick for mine and it reads over-filled too. Like you, I ground a new full mark onto the dipstick. I'll be lucky to put 10,000 miles on the truck in my lifetime, so I'm not too worried about it. It might be that your dipstick tube was shoved into the block lower than it's sock location, and thus shows overfilled.
I agree with carnut122 I have a 302 347 stroker double sump pan I too had to make a new mark on the dip stick, I was never told 5 or 6 quarts so I guess I run 5 1/2 in it
