I have a 1991 F250 diesel and want to get a brake controller for it. Does my truck have a plug under the dash for the controller to plug into? I saw a small grey rectangular plug under the dash that wasn't conected to anything, is this it?
Thanks
Lars
The bigger clue would be if you have the Ford trailer connector under the rear of your truck. It is a black plastic(at least mine is) about 3 inch square round connector with a flap door. If you have one of these, the odds are good that you have the brake controller connector under the dash.
I forget the color of the controller connector but it is a rectangular connector that is roughly against the fire wall over the tranny hump and about directly behind the ash tray, at least on a 94 F250. It is pretty easy to see.
I do have the plug you described on the back. Does any one know of a good place to buy the plug from? Are there any good online stores that will have them? Also what brake controller do you guys recomend, for pulling a twin axle trailer, and a single axle trailer?
Thanks
Lars
Motobub, quite a few of us in the forum have the Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller and are quite satisfied with it. It's a state of the art electronic controller that can be mounted from 0-90 degrees and even works when backing up. Pendulum type controllers do not work when backing. The Prodigy works by sensing the deceleration of the tow vehicle and applying the trailer brakes accordingly.
Regarding your wiring, I looked at the installation instructions that came with my Prodigy:
Your truck may be a late '91 if it has a 4-pin connector under the panel, directly under the radio because the instructions say the '89-'91 doesn't have have the 4-pin connector.
Here's what the instructions say for '89-'91 E and F series:
The brake control's RED (stoplight) wire must splice into the stoplight line via the turn signal harness. The turn signal harness is a crescent shaped connector attached to the steering column. The connector has two rows with four positions on the inner row and seven positions on the outer row. The wire, which needs to be spliced into, is LIGHT GREEN in color and is located at the second position of the outer row of seven.
Here is what the instructions say for '92-'93 E and F series:
The brake control's RED (stoplight) wire splices into the Ford 4-pin connector's LIGHT GREEN wire for F series or LIGHT GREEN WITH RED TRACER for E series. The connector is located at the bottom of the instrument panel, directly below the radio, for F series, and newr the brake pedal support arm for E series.
Whichever brake controller you choose, should come with the correct methood for wiring and installation.

My Prodigy instruction sheet only allowed for 0-70 degree mounting. It also warns about mounting at anything close to 70 degrees if towing on steep grades.
Matt, you're right. It is 0-70 degrees. Thanks for catching that.
Besides the advisory on mounting near 70* while driving in hills, the instructions also said to aviod putting it perfectly level because the brake controller could activate on hard acceleration.
