Guys, the GPS works well but i need to get some kind of mile marker and speedo on this beast. I have the LS rear with the VSS and i do have the hanging wires with connector from the IP housing, but how can i hook in tach or speedo? I also have the xfer case electrical plugin. I know i can get the tach sensor that straps around the alternator but what about speedo? Just get a whole setup or?
92 and up needs the VSS signal.
92 down needs a cable from the transfercase.
I can't remember if the speedometer signal on the 92 trucks has to go through the PCM first. I don't think so because some trucks of that era had the IDI and 5 speed transmission - which would not need a computer anywhere in the truck.
Best starting point would probably be to get a manual that has good wiring diagrams and try to reverse engineer that. If nothing else, you will need that for reference if you opt to get a complete wiring harness out of a wrecker instead.
well i have the 1994 f150 interior haha. I am trying to find a cluster from a 1993 or so so that i can just bolt it in but the more i think about it, i want all of the gauges to be mostly in the pillar pod and then i can just mount whatever i want in the cluster area. The more i say cluster, the more i laugh. hahaha it really is one. If i can nail this down i will be solid. i maybe get two drips of oil now, so i am not hot to do the crossmember mod so i can save for that one over time, but i really want a tach and speedo. I am thinking that the rear end is a 1992 the more i look at it but who knows? literally! it seems to be identical to my friends and he has the VSS on the LS rear end, just like mine does. Since i have the VSS on the rearend, is it the newer?
The VSS seems to be universal from 1987 and up even though 1992 and up was when ford introduced the electronic speedometer. I remember Starmilt saying he swapped on across that transition year without any problems so you should be good to go using what you have to drive a 1992 and up speedometer......
of course, now you have to get all difficult and pine about making something different with pillar pods and what not.....why do I even bother......
because its fun! hahaha. Itll work out in the end. I really do wish i could just swap out a whole cluster.....anyone donors out there? All i can find is the pre 1993 styles. ah well, ill get there one day!! with your help of course! lol!
The speedometer can be out of anything 92 and up, but for the tach, it would be best to find a donor diesel truck to rip it from. Wrecking yards should be able to find something especially if they have a network like BC auto wrecking or comox valley auto recycling both have. Of course, they will probably want some blood and an organ as a down payment.....
Other then that, just keep an eye out on craigslist for trucks being parted out.
One of the local wreckers here usually wants $75 for a complete cluster assembly an he is easily the lowest price around. I don't think he has a diesel ford 92 and up though.
Funny thing is princess auto had a surplus sale on diesel tachs for that era of truck a couple years ago. Was strange seeing that in the flier but what the heck could I do with them? Thinking back I guess I could have bought them off for safe keeping since these parts will get rare as time goes on. Oh well...
ive had an order in at two yards for a cluster for three months and nothing. starting to get frustrated too because i have seen three trucks that match the specs i set and not a phone call but when i check the yard, the dash is in pieces. He says oh yeah it came like that. Friggin bull**** ******* so i stopped asking and told everyone i know to ignore him.
