Is there ANY reason why I shouldn't use 5w20 in the early 99 V10? According to the books by ford, it's only for 2001+ v10...........
I just don't understand why I get a max of 8mpg city but on average of 15mpg highway @65 mph. I drive like a granny! Others are getting 10-11 mpg city....I'd LOVE to get that city. I mean my truck is almost stock, it's just got oem 4.30 gears and 285/75/16. Maybe 5w20 will help me get closer to my goal of 10mpg city.
You use more HP getting up to speed than maintaining it. Also when in heavy stop and go traffic you sit idleing a lot and that just kills your miliage. This is why hybrids do so well in traffic is because they take and store energy used to stop the car and use if to charge batteries so the next time you accelerate you use that stored energy. I don't think thinner oil is going to overcome physics. You will probably gain more from thinner oil on long trips. I am not a fan of thinner oil because I think you have less margin thickness of oil when then engine is hot or under alot of stress. You are more likely to get metal to metal contact under these conditions.
I have use 5W20 almost from the beginning in my 99 F350 v10 DRW 4x4 extended cab long bed and just passed 333,000 miles. 60,000+ of that pulling a 10,000lb 5r RV. Only when I have pulled a lot of miles in hot weather, do I need to add any oil between 3,000 oil changes. I would not like to add at 1500, but neither would worry about it.
