My '04 XLT was missing the spare when I bought it. I scared up a factory steel rim but bone yards around here don't have any of the mounting hardware so it's not an option to find one there. All I have is the eyelet coming out of the rear quarter panel. What does the rest of it look like?
I would appreciate pics of how the spare was mounted by the factory. Can someone do that for me?
I can then fabricate a similar mounting unless someone with oversized tires would be willing to sell me the factory mounts. I want to make sure the spare doesn't become a projectile in an accident.
The mounting is fairly simple. Just a hook bolt that goes through the eyelet, then a conical piece that fits in the center of the rim with a hole in the center for the hook bolt, then a huge wingnut. You could probably pick up similar hardware in a junkyard. Check large sedans that can hold full size spare. You may need a longer hook bolt, though. Or just buy the hook and nut and make a bracket out of hardwood.
I swapped out the steel rim with the same aluminum alloy rim like the rest of my wheels. In doing so, it was almost impossible to put back on with the hook bolt. I had to make another one.
I have that hook bolt, but no wing nut. I also have the steel rim. It's practically brand new and never mounted on the truck. I was going to sell it as scrap metal because I didn't think anyone would be interested in buying it.
