I need help quick. I need new engine mounts, what should I get, poly or rubber? I can get a sweet deal on the poly. They are usually like $300 and I can get them in the $150 range. The only concern is that am I going to feel a lot of vibration and such from the engine with the poly? I might change to a built 351 with about 350-400hp in the future so since the mounts will work with both engines, I'd like to get a set that will work with both. Is poly the way to go? Or should I just get the rubber ones? My friend has a 350hp mustang and the rubber ones didn't last very long at all so he switched to poly. So poly or rubber?
I'd go for the poly. They hold up better under extreme conditions and last longer too. Another thought: Get the poly tranny mounts if you can also. With just the mounts on the engine I've heard it can put added stress on the tranny case if you don't change eveything over to poly.
Agreed. Replace engine and trans mounts as a set, whichever you choose to go with. Rubber mounts degrade not just from age and heat but from oil, fuel and other solvents. If you are considering a hi-power motor, stock mounts won't cut it.
I think I'm going to go with the rubber ones for now because I won't be changing my motor for atleast a year and 1/2. I don't think the poly will be too great with a stock motor, I've heard that it causes a lot of vibration. Do you guys thing that is a good plan of action?
rubber motor mounts seem to work fine for every car I've seen. Polyurethane motor mounts are for 16 year old mustang kids and rice car kids that think it's gonna make a difference, but mostly are attracted to the idea of putting something colorful under their hood. All you're doing is risking damage to your driveline. Think about it, rubber dampens vibrations, polyurethane will dampen some, but mostly transmit the vibrations, and to what? your U-joints and the frame, oh what a lovely thing to deal with as you're driving to work at 7 am.
I decided to get the rubber ones from Napa. Cost me 25 bucks each. I talked to the guy who's working on it and he said that there was only an 1/8th of an inch between the top metal piece and the bottom ha. They were clanking pretty bad. Thanks for your help.
Although you already decided. Here's what what i think- stay with the rubber when you put your new motor in and add a torque chain, it's a piece of log chain that you bolt to frame and run to engine block. It'll save your motor mounts and won't have the vib that the poly will give you. Hot Rods do it all the time.
