I have a 460 i'm putting in an f150. I am bolting it to an np435 and am having a few problems. I got a flywheel from a 390 and although it bolts up okay, the clutch wont bolt to it. Its a 12" clutch and the bolt holes on it are spaced about 1/2" to far to bolt to it. Also, when i hold the clutch disk up to the flywheel, the springs on the clutch hit the flywheel bolts. Does this mean the flywheel has been machined too far and i need a new one? And do i need to get an 11" clutch instead of a 12" one? Thanks for any help.
Thanks for that help. I have a 360 flywheel. So I guess I'm going to buy a 460 flywheel and clutch. That way I can still use my 460 starter. Thanks again.
HOLD ON!!! You have to have the right balance flywheel. You can only use 460 flywheels on 79 and later motors. The 360 flywheel is correct for a pre 79 motor. I have always used a 460 starter with a 360 flywheel without any problems. I have two trucks now that are using this set-up. I have also drilled and tapped two 360 flywheels to take the bigger pressure plate.
Very true. . .I have one, but it came with the 460 that was swapped in
BUT, he did say he was going to have to buy a 460 clutch and flywheel already. . .I just wanted someone else to reaffirm that he could indeed just buy a 429 flywheel and not have to worry about fit and operation.
Quick Google search shows they run roughly the same $$$ wise

What year is the block?
He didn't say, and the early 429/460 block was used thru 1978 on cars, thru midyear 1979 on F100/350's & E150/350's.
There is no serial number break, or production date listed, when Ford switched engine blocks midyear 1979...which has been a PITA ever since.
Bare block casting numbers:
Early: D1VE-6015-AB; AB1; AB2.
Late: D9TE-6015-AB.
429 flywheels are very hard to find and expensive if you do find one.
My 460 is a 78 so it is the neutral balance type. I know i could just get a 360 clutch for it but i decided to get the 460 flywheel because of simplicity. Later on I wont have to remember what flywheel or what clutch or other parts i put on it. I just get a 460 complete setup and dont worry about it. Plus the new flywheel is only $50. I'd rather spend the extra right now and have a new or refurbished flywheel as opposed to the used one i have now. I just hope they send me the right flywheel. The website said it will fit early 70s, mid and late 70s and even early 80s vehicles which i know is wrong because of the switch to external balance in 79. so we'll see.
