Extremely loose shifter (ZF6)

Extremely loose shifter (ZF6)
So I got a call from my little brother and he said that his shifter was extremly loose. So I decided to drive his truck and it was like nothing that I had ever driven. Keep in mind that we both have handshakers, mine a 2001 and his a 1999. I mean it is driveable but has ALOT of slop in it. Like when I put mine in neutral the **** stands up. When I put his in neutral the know falls like it wants to go in 4th gear. Also when the truck is any gear you can take the shifter and move it in about a 4-6 in circle without it coming out of gear. I havent had a chance to take the boot off and look at it but it seems like there is a joint under the boot that the shifter rod connects to, and it feels like it is either loose, broke, or just worn out. Any help???
