I have a 2004 with a modified 6 inch exhaust system, Bullydog tuner with monitor, and K&N airbox. Intermittently, I will notice the boost will get to 35-36 lbs which causes turbo bark when you ease off the accelerator. No codes have been received and it only does it intermittently. The weather doesn't seem to have much to do with it because the weather has been constant. Also, when there is excessive boost, the EGT's go up. It is very noticeable when I am not towing but when towing, the EGT's get high enough quickly enough for the defueler to hit the limit and reduce fuel to the motor to lower the EGT's. It only has 65,000 miles on it but not warranty and I would like to try to fix the truck without taking it to the dealership because of all of the horror stories I have read on this site.
I'm no expert but since no one else has answered, here goes. I think you have "sticky" turbo vanes. 35 psi. boost is NOT GOOD! You will more than likely stretch your head bolts VERY soon if you keep driving it like this. To address the "sticky" vanes the turbo needs to be torn apart and cleaned. There are some detailed write-ups on the procedure here so do a search and you will find a how-to on the job. I've never done it,but I hear it's not too bad. Also, you asked for opinions so here's mine, get rid of the Bullydog. The Bullydog has been reported to be "hard" on these trucks. Not trying to start anything, just giving you my honest opinion. The SCT with custom tunes is considered by most here to be the best programmer for our trucks. I prefer the stock route, but to each their own.Hopefully someone else with more experience will chime in soon but this is where I would start if it were me. Good luck!!
The K & N also has a less than stellar rep on the 6.0 and has no advantage over the stock intake. The Bully Dog also has a rep. for destroying the torqueshift trannies. As stated above, not flaming just passing info on from many other subscribers.
I appreciate the responses and look forward to anyone providing information and their opinions. I will give the information some thought and may return the truck to it's stock configuration.
Since is just starting to act in the way described and only very intermittently, is there an easier method of freeing up or lubricating the vanes other than turbo removal. Not very mechanically inclined and don't know if I want to tackle this. And right now in this economy, I would rather not have to pay someone to fix it if at all possible.
Again thanks for the responses and keep them coming.
pretty much need to pull the turbo (it's really easy to do) and clean it well. As far as the bullydog/and intake the others are correct. I found out the hard way, and so did 2 of my friends.
i pulled and cleaned my turbo as well. Truck runs great under all conditions. However, like I have posted in the past, while towing I can see 35 psi pulling a hill if the truck downshifts. I never notice the turbo sticking and not turbo farts at all. Just food for thought.
