I'm being told that my truck doesn't qualify for tax relief in the State of Virginia due to the vehicle weight being listed as 10,000lbs and it has to weigh 7500 or less to qualify.
Does anyone else live in Virginia with a similar vehicle and qualify for tax relief? If you look on your tax bill it's listed as "Less State Share".
I am looking for the info on how the new F350 with the 6.7 in a CC SB will register. The 7500LB from my understanding is not the GVWR, which is the 10K is the GVWR of the F250 I believe. I have an Excursion, with a GVWR of 9200# and GVW I believe around 7800#.
On my registration, it states an EW of 7127#. The tax break is for Private Use Vehicles under a Weight of 7500#. We get the break with our Excursion. I am guessing that the EW weight is the completely unloaded weight of the truck.
My question is what will a 2011 6.7 PSD F350 CC SB 4X4 EW (what ever EW stands for) be for VA registration? I imagine it will be close to the same as what the F250 would be as well.
VA prop tax is garbage. I absolutely hate these people for continuing with this crap. It's almost like they are trying to keep you from life, liberty and the persuit of happiness through taxes.... Commonwealth trash.
Yes i just asked the same thing. It really comes down to tags and usage. If you use it for business no relief. If it has truck tags no relief. If you have regular plates it does qualify. My question is what other than saving 500$ a year on tax do the tags make. Are you not allowed over 7500lbs with passenger tags? Thats my understanding
I am curious as to what the benefit of having Truck Tags are? You will obviously be paying more for your Personal Property Tax if you have the Truck Tags.
I can see if you are using it for business, but if not why would you get them?
From what I can find, it looks like the Curb or Empty weight of the F350/250 is under the 7500# limit to qualify for the Tax Relief if registered as a private vehicle.
The registration cost goes up for vehicles over 4001#'s, though.
Thats what im asking! If you register it as 7499 and get passenger tags though i guess 7499-vehicle weight would be your legal capacity...
Dealer put truck tags on my 9000lb gvwr f250... Not sure if i want them but i know i dont want to be limited to 7500lbs. Hopefully someone knowledeable will show up to shed some light on this. Dmv and web search left me in the dark

I do not believe the 7500#'s has to do with the GVWR, just the EW (Empty Weight). I believe the EW is the same as Curb Weight.
On my registration for the Excursion, it only lists the EW, at 7127#'s. The GW, GVWR, and GCWR are all blank.
I just had a dealer tell me that their DMV Clerk said they have to base it off of the GVWR. A VA Registration actually has a spot for GW and GVWR (also EW and GCWR). The clerk said that after being issued Truck Tags by the dealer, the customers go to the DMV to get them switched to normal tags.
I have been looking around as I drive, and it seems the majority of the F250/350's I see do not have Truck Tags on them either.
We most likely will not be moving into the F350 until first part of next year, I just want to make sure I ultimately do not get screwed with Ruck Tags, and paying more in Personal Property.
Anyone know what it takes to get the DMV to switch the tags? Or have your dealers just issued you the standard tags at time of purchase?
I am just, as is the original poster, just trying to avoid paying too much in taxes for a personal use vehicle.
Jonathan, your truck is clearly a Super Duty Truck with out TR tags on it. Any SD Truck would have a GVWR in excess of 7500 pounds. Hopefully I can get it all straight along with the OP.
What did you show the DMV (or what did the dealer do) to get it registered with out TR Tags?
I hate Personal Property Taxes!!! Tax you when you buy it, then continue to tax you to own it...

A Lot of grey area with the DMV... I have searched the DMV site, and Googled the web. No where can I find what they are looking for for as far as GW goes.
Heck, my Excursion does not even list a GW (or GVWR or GCWR) on the registration, only an EW.
I do believe that the EW on any of the Super Duties is less than 7500, maybe that will work!
When I quit farming, I was going to switch from F-tags (Farm Vehicle-Business-no tax relief) to Truck tags which also do not qualify for relief on my 350. Clerk at DMV actually asked if I wanted to list GVWR as 7500 so I could get regular tags, which I promptly did. Been through road checks, etc. with no problems - I don't know the difference either, unless I guess you routinely pull a trailer or something.
