Are my boots leaking?

I was under the hood the other day and noticed a lot of "residue" on the boots and thought I would snap a pic and ask the experts.

So what do yous think? Are my boots leaking? If they are its a pretty simple fix right? Thanks for your replys.

I'd say they are, your passenger side however looks like somethings being blown onto it from some where. However easy fix, just remove your boots clean them and spray Hair spray on them when you put them back on and tighten the s**t out of them.

That is a bunch of oil residue. Doesn't mean they are leaking though. Several folks do the ccv mod to eliminate the oily residue. Mine weren't that bad, but I decided to replace them as a safety measure. There wasn't any real definitive answer given on the longevity of the boots, but since they were 10 years old, I felt better safe than sorry. I have noticed a slightly higher boost level with it staying sustained for a longer period of time.

Looks like something's a little loose. Pretty common for the clamps to be a bit loose and leak oil vapors from the CCV. Tighten up the clamps on the 4 boots that attach at each end of the silver intercooler tubes. Also be sure to tighten up the hose clamps on the orange boots between the spider and the intake plenums. (the boots are probably covered now, but grab a rag and wipe things down directly below the boots you took a picture of and you'll find the orange boots that attach to the intake)

Remember, not too tight, just good and snug.

Thanks guys,
Richard why hairspray?
And could the boot be being sprayed on from the HPOP? I have a leak there I need to fix, and that would answer that question too.

Chris, is there a torque value for that? And what happens if I over do it? Break the clamp?
wreck the boot?

The stuff you're tightening onto ends up getting crushed. 71 in-lbs is the spec. I always just go good and snug feeling. You can go more on the tubes, and if you were to get the plenum reinforcing sleeves from Riffraff, you wouldn't have to worry too much about crushing the intake plenums, which is the weakest part of the equation.

And the hair spray just makes things sticky, which helps keep the boots in place.

The lower intake spider boots, the orange ones you don't want to tourqe down to much as Chris was explaining, you can crush the intake plenums the boots connects too. Their made of a thin metal so its not hard to crush or bend them a bit then you'll need to get a plenum insert kit from Clay. Just snug them down easy but firm. IMO, I'd order a new set of boots for your truck, the new ones are so much better made I think these boots from Clay on mine will last the life of my truck. Well Chris, I'm slower than you now, your getting better, lol.

The boots on my 00 7.3 were leaking pretty bad also found that I put the blue rubber boot on backwards I looked on the inside of the boot and noticed that there is a beveled edge that the intercooler tubes have a ridge that is form fitted to. Flipped them around and fixed the problem. ( might be wrong but think I see the ridge in your pics)

Thanks Mike, I'll be super careful when I tighten them down. I won't be able to get new ones until spring next year (hopefully) but I have been eying up the ones on Clays site, they look pretty sweet.
Jeff I'll check that out when I clean up and tighten up everything.
