Blah blah blah I am going to do some quick repairs on a 1978 Ford F100 of mine, and one I want to tackle pretty quick is the tranny. Its a 4spd OD (Heard it called the mustang style tranny) well it whines in second and fourth gear to beat hell and it will pop out of fourth if you let your foot off the gas and let it decelerate.I am asking what the problem is and how to fix it. IDK what kind of transmision it is but I know its not a gran daddy low transmission. Its a O/D tranny. Thanks guys much appreciated.
Those transmissions are affectionately called Toploader Imposters or also 3+1 toploaders. The newer SROD imposters are mostly called the "mustang" trannys.
As for gear whine, you have the right lube (80w90) and enough of it?
For shifters coming out of gear the stops for the shifter can be adjusted. It may just need to be adjust in a slight bit. But given the age, use and miles I would assume it's time for a rebuild. They are very easy to work on, just need some snap ring pliers.
These guys are very well respected in the toploader community, but he has some sort of bias against the 3+1, but he has rebuild kits and new parts David Kee Toploader Transmissions, Inc.
Most people I talk to do not like these transmissions either. Hard on clutches, wear out faster etc... The one's I have driven, I do not like them much either. But I live in mountain terrain and that tends to kill these trannies. Especially taking off in first, loaded on a hill.
Better with a regular 4 speed like the T-18 or NP435 or a 5 speed conversion from a newer truck if possible. My opinion.
Well this truck isnt going to be loaded, its going to be a sport truck, its acutally going to have a fake back story that Carroll Shelby wanted to make a 'Sport Truck' so he took a F100 and made its a 'GT100' You know, make it a sports car with a truck body. Thats my plans. And thanks guys.
