I'm trying to figure out what my choices are for a back bumper on my 78 f-150. I know I could go with a step bumper but not sure I want to do that what other choices might I have and is there anything from something newer that would work?
This will all come down to personnel choice. I have a 10 inch chrome Texas drop bumper on mine and I think nothing beats it, but Dad has a stock chome bronco style bumper on his and it fits the look on his truck perfectly. What you like and how you have done up your truck will decide what bumper it wants.
This chrome one I got at a swap meet looks great on my truck in my opinion. Just another one to think about. Also does anyone know where this bumper is from? I got told a 77 F.250, but its mounts are 35" apart, so 77.5-79 F.250? Also I only see them on 80-86 trucks.
just looks like an old aftermarket chrome step bumper to me. My 78 had one just like it on there, just painted brown steel instead of chrome. My 77 supercab had one too painted silver.
If you can live with non Ford parts there are a lot of options, and a lot of them will direct bolt because the frame width is the same... Mine came off of a '90 Chevy Suburban.
The bumper itself is perfect width (IMO), not narrower than the body, but not wider either--I don't like a bumper wider than the vehicle, it has to fit just right to look right. And amazingly, the curve on the ends is 90% the same as the fender corners..
Its plastic tread topped for traction, and a good flat step, but also gave the smooth contoured look instead of being boxy.
Thanks guys!
I went with it at the time because it was free off of a 'burban a buddy and i parted out, and the mounts were the right width... Got it on there and realized how good it looked so I've kept it.
Need to remember to find another of the black trim pieces for the drivers side of it, I keep forgetting that. Its got a pretty good tow rating stamped on it, and holes for a hitch ball under the middle plastic piece. I recently got rid of the center plastic and bed lined it there for traction.
I should clarify though, it wasn't 'exactly' a bolt on deal... But 99%. just had to drill a couple holes. The bracket width on the bumper is exactly the same as my frame width. But either my stock bumper or the chevy one(I think they came on the chevy bumper) was mounted with a plate that bridged the bumper bracket and the frame.... I used them, and drilled new holes in them to match a couple stock frame holes, and one hole added to the frame on either side to keep it 3 bolts per side like I had stock.
